The technical details behind Intel's 7 watt Ivy Bridge CPUs

Intel explains how the new CPUs can use 7 watts of power, sort of.

Intel explains how the new CPUs can average a maximum of 7W of dissipation. In another way of putting it, you've purchased a machine that can run at 2GHz, but only for 10 seconds before it throttles back.

Well, it's not actually as bad as I painted - you're already enjoying some of this with your CPU and it's turbo speed. It's really just taking that a little further with devices that can't dissipate much heat (laptop/embedded device).

Thing is, with my CPU, it CAN go 100%, 100% of the time. It doesn't claim 4.8 gigs, then give you that for a minute the cut you back... if I'm understanding properly what Intel is up to?
