| Fedora 10 vs. Ubuntu 8.10 Benchmarks Written by Daniel Saturday, 29 November 2008 With Fedora 10 finally entering the world earlier this week, we have performed benchmarks comparing the performance of Ubuntu 8.10 and Fedora 10 Published on November 28, 2008 Written by Michael Larabel In our testing we used both the 32-bit and 64-bit builds of each distribution and then ran a series of automated tests through the Phoronix Test Suite. | I have a fresh install of Gentoo 64bit on my rig so I will install the test suite and see how it fairs against the others.

| Say, is there a way to freeze the boot up in order to better read and perhaps figure out messages there in? I'm getting a message about my 4 core chip or the way it's set up, but don't have time to read it!

| Boy was that test ever a waste of space. The benchmark comparison was like kissing my sister. Could it have been any closer?Little reason to change to Fedora now, if those tests are reliable; I'm on Ubuntu 8.10/64 already. One question though: why is audio encoding, like mp3 or ogg, generally slower on 64-bit OS? There is a huge difference, in fact.

| Without this test what proof would I have that Fedora is better...for that matter what proof do I have with this test? They seem to have missed the whole idea behind benchmarking....to make me feel superior!":O}

| There really is no reason to expect one to be faster than the other. Both use the same components under the hood and both are running the same software suite. I'll start running the tests tonight, currently set up with 2 Gigs of memory and the CPU is at 3.2 so I am not expecting spectacular results compared to the linked benches.

| I have 5 bucks says Fedora wins every time....which is to say YOU will have 5 bucks if Fedora wins every time... I've been working on my subtlety..what do ya think!? ":O}

| Since I've been using Fedora for over a year, I think I'm going to stick with it. Nothing against Ubuntu, just amateur preference. I've never upgraded before though [edit] I'm afraid to upgrade because I am so happy with my Fedora 8 right now. Everything is working perfectly, except maybe my frame rates in Doom 3 with my old Radeon 9600 Pro. Since I've been researching a lot of Linux issues lately I've read about people having problems with their upgrade. Is this a normal problem or have any of you upgraded with no side-effects at all?

| @Cliff: Are there any graphics-intensive tests in the suite?

| There are quite a few graphics tests, ranging from workstations to gaming. Quake 4 seeming to be the toughest they have available in the gaming suite. I haven't run any of the workstation tests to see if any of those are tougher on my system. None of the tests so far have even made the fan speed go up on my card..

| The benchmarks for MP3 and Ogg are measured in time elapsed, so the more time elapsed, the slower the process was. For Ogg, the 64bit OS was about 1.5 times as fast as the 32bit OS.

| Ahhh...of course. What a colossal dope. That's what I get for not reading carefully enough-a foot in the mouth.

| My update was very smooth. I updated from 8 to 10, never ran 9. (Thanks for letting me off the hook Boo.":O}

| I had a little battle with some dependencies for the test suite but I now have them resolved and will start running the tests tonight. Too bad they ran the graphics tests at such a high resolution. Would have liked to see how I fared.
