| Hmm......sounds like maybe the grub boot sector got hosed some way. If you are willing, let's try restoring your backup and running the update again. I'm don't want to try talking you through repairing the grub installation, as doing so introduces the possibility of trashing your current backup if something goes wrong, and I'm not 100% certain of what's wrong with grub. So, restore your backup, but DO NOT allow it to install any updates!

| BTW, take your time, as I've got to go check on my Mother again, and I'll probably be out of contact for a couple of hours.

| We have 193 updates pending. I clicked my way to review the updates after loading for a while I recived this message: "Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: InstallMedia. Please verify its path and try again" I'll leave this with you until you have time. At one point I did successfully install nearly everything, leaving out Gnome and Gnome pannel. Also right before it crashed to GRUB, I went back into the System update to see if there remained any updates, there didn't seem to be so I clicked closed and it seemed frozen, so I clicked the x-box and it closed I rebooted and found grub...

| Ok, first things first. I'm assuming that you are back up and running on your re-imaged drive that was borked? If that is the case, then go to a command line and su, then do: Code: yum install yum-utils Once you've installed yum utils, do: Code: yum-complete-transaction

| I'm going ahead and trying the update, I'll restore and yum if it borks as it may! I'll update...LOL Yeah it quite the update....this is where I got in trouble. I went and tried to find what wasn't updating and unchecked them...I'd install 20 or so at a time, when it failed I look to see if I could figuer out the linux clues at to the offender. THEN I GOT GRUBED! LOL

| First, I want you to run yum-complete-transaction and make sure there aren't any outstanding transactions. If there are, keep running yum-complete-transaction until it reports back completed. If it had to complete any transactions, then I want you to reboot before proceeding to the next step below. Ok, lets remove and reinstall gpanel-applets, but let's do this a piece at a time: Code: yum remove gpanel-applets

| Just an opinion, but at this point wouldn't it be easier and cleaner to have Daniel back up his /home to another partition or drive, do a clean install of FC10 then move his personal files back to the default /home? I know this wouldn't take care of any user installed apps, but I'm thinking there aren't too many of them.. Might also be time to get Daniel familiar with partitioning his drives, rather than using the default layout.

| Really cool trick would be to turn ssh on in private key only mode and expose the machine on a public port.

Soon as you put the /home dir back in place you'll get your gnome settings and everything back. Don't have to do it, just an option though.
