Steam on Linux no longer a rumor

Looks like Linux may actually get its big break with games. Valve has been working on a native port to Linux without Wine. They have been testing Left-For-Dead 2.
I'm curious to see where this is going...
I have always said "the only reason I use Windows on all my machines is for games".
But what if there was a day when I didn't have to worry about license keys, updates, security patches... etc?
I would love to play all my games and LAN parties on Linux!

Yeah, I hope they can port all of the steam engine games to linux natively.... that would be awesome because their are over 1000 mods for the Halfe-Life, Half-Life2, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2 and other games.
This would mean a huge repository of games/mods for Linux gamers.
And like I said previously, maybe I could finally let go of Windows and run my LAN Parties with Linux only!
How awesome would that be?

How does 3D performance in Linux compare to Windows these days? It used to be pretty bad, but I'm hoping things have got better!

Thats is exactly what I'm going to find out!
I'm installing linux on my new computer and plan to optimize it just for games!
The biggest problem is that only Steam OpenGL games will work in linux natively. Any DirectX game has to be run in Wine or Cadega and I havn't experimented with those yet.
There are a lot of OpenGL games out there, not to mention all the Playstation 3 games.... which I had no idea was running on their own custom Sony distro.
So its totally possible, but it maybe 2020 when there are plenty of games to run.

It's been pretty good for a long time when using nVidia propriety drivers... I haven't kept up with AMD's efforts for ages. It looks like Linux is slightly slower than W7 for a lot of games, based on various benchmarks at Phoronix, however they're talking about barely perceptible differences a lot of the time.

Good to hear!
I'm planning on starting with older games first and then checking out some newer games made to natively run on Linux.

Older Games: Doom 3, Quake 3, Quake Wars
Older Games Wine: Battlefield series (1942, Vietnam, 2)
Steam Games Wine: Halfe-Life 2, Counter-Strike, Half-Life
