I may be trouble free in this regaurds as I always give Linux it's own drive...just so much easier for me to keep things stright. I actually have my drives phycally marked, Mint, Mint debain, MATE and Cinnamon. ( though I have to reinstall MATE and Debain, they were sacrficed in another failed attempt to RAID.)

Give it a try...one less thing right?

I may have to. How crazy would that be if the DVD worked?
I was also looking at the ISO testing page and they test AMD vs i386 processors but the downloads don't specify which CPU... so I'm guessing every release includes AMD & Intel support.
I'm running an AMD 3-core processor.

Here is my to do list:
1. Run Live on optional hard drive
2. Run Live with DVD
3. Run Live other desktop versions: KDE, Mate, Xfce
4. Run Live with other distro (checking for hardware issues)

No no no! You download either 64bit AMD or 32 bit. check out the Windows installer limitations, this "Might" be where you got hung?
I'm a bit confused about AMD 64....It doesn't seem to mean what I would think! It doesn't mean AMD and not Intel. I use AMD64 on my intel 64 bit machine. So ignore it untill Gizmo has time to instruct us, mostly that's what I do!

looking at this page it would seem you really really want the 64bit version?

Exactly, so I guess they test the releases separately but we only get to choose 64-bit or 32-bit. So it shouldn't matte which CPU we have.

I really don't see any Windows limitations besides the Mint4win which looks like a virtual environment to run Mint in Windows.
I also read some of the manual and didn't find anything related to my problem.
After I go through my check list, I will be able narrow down the problem to Linux or my Hardware.

I wonder if I should just test all of this on a different computer with older hardware?

My hardware is pretty new and no problems with the P5Q or the much newer Sabertooth Z77.

Remember their goal is a stable desktop that Steam and the like can depend upon remaining stable for the next 5 years. install from USB is great,and I want it but I would think, not a central focus for Mint teams.

What they made SURE to nail down was DVD install. That's where I would expect to find the broadest compatibility. but as alwats...I just could be wrong! ":O}

I beleve this is the first or second release that 32 bit and 64 bit were equally recommended. Also in the past 32 bit was usually released months before the 64 bit verrsion. Time marches on! ":O}

Windows installer only works with the 64 bit version, is what caught my eye... may not be an issue for you, just caught my eye.":O}

I just thought of something... do you think the Mint4win will install Mint on my other partition while virtualized in Windows?
I am running a 64-bit Windows 7

I'll have to do some research... if I can install from a virtual environment, then I won't need a CD, DVD or a USB drive.

Found it:
Quote:
The Windows installer "Mint4Win", is included on the Live CD and allows Linux Mint to be installed from within Microsoft Windows. The operating system can then be removed similar to any other Windows software using the Windows Control Panel. This method requires no partitioning of the hard drive. It is only useful for Windows users; it is not meant for permanent installations because it incurs a slight performance loss.

The "Mint4Win" installer creates the Linux filesystem within a file on your existing hard disk. It's then able to boot from that filesystem. The downside is that access to the Linux filesystem goes through to file handling and through to the NTFS filesystem, so you lose disk performance over a native Linux partition.

SUCCESS!!!
Ironically, I was successful in booting Live Mint 12!!!
who knew? I never figured an older release would work over a newer one.
I have not installed Mint 12 yet, but it booted, loaded up with "nomodeset" in the boot options and I was on a Mint desktop.... yea!

So maybe tonight, I'll do the install and hopefully it will still see Win 7.
Now my question is.... how hard is it to upgrade from 12 to 13? I know that it is possible, but I've never upgraded Linux to a newer version before. I really like Mint 13 and Maya.

I've never done it. I just offload every thing I want to keep to my thumbdrive and go for broke...

There would be no shame if after you succeeded with Mint 12, you just install 13 from DVD... Really, not even the good folks at Mint would think less of you! ":O}

(Have you any idea how long I've waited for a Mint partner in this forums...sigh...LOL)

I've got Mint 12 installed!!!
My first goal is to get nvidia drivers installed. There was a cool pop-up that told me there were drivers available, but I clicked activate and it failed.
I'm sure there are some packages/dependencies/kernel updates that I need before they will install.

I tried running the updater and it froze my system... so I had to reset.
I'll try again tonight. If anything, I'll just update via the Shell and see where it gets me.
I really don't want to do that because the whole point of using Mint is to do every as easy as possible (for future users/tests)

Boo your starting to shake my faith in Mint!

Maybe I live is good fortunes bubble unaware of the difficuties poeople are having around me. I started using Mint 8 used ,9,10,11. skipped 12 and now 13.

I've never had a problem, except in 13 where you MUST update your system before installing Nvidia drivers. P{erhaps in 12 as well?

At this point in my Mint experence if something went seriously wrong I'd have a good cry. Camelot would have faded once more into history...":O}

We know no distro is perfect and no operating system is perfect, but I'm willing to give Mint a stubborn try.
I just don't understand why it installed so easily on older computers but is having issues on newer computers?
I've been reading through their hardware forums and see a lot of common issues.
One is the same problem I had with the Live Disc not starting correctly.
The other is upgrading problems from an earlier version to 13.
I also found it strange that Mint 12 automatically download language packs. It was going to take 30 minutes to download this language packs that I DON'T even need. I could skip it, but wonder if that messes up the update process?

Anyways, I plan to update then upgrade and see if I could end up with Mint 13.
If I have problems, then I'm starting from scratch again.
Worst case scenario, I will be stuck with Mint 12 and start installing Dosbox, Wine and some native Linux games. Not to mention the video drivers.

How weird is this? I went to Nvidia.com and did a search for GeForce 500 series Linux 32-bit drivers and NOTHING!!!
I thought that was very strange because I downloaded them for Fedora from the same place!!! What is going on here?

yes, there is nothing to click on so I can agree to the license and download.
Do you have a agree and download button?
nevermind, I found them under Beta & Legacy drivers.
