Mint 13>Wine>PlayOnLinux> Steam> Half-life 2

Like a whole big bunch of other people, I've been counting the Days until Steam delivers on its attempts to port to Ubuntu, We wish them well!

But if your running Ubuntu or Mint based upon ubuntu you may have more of a gaming platform than you thought.

Half life 2 and Half Life 2, Episode one both run smooth as silk ( based upon one hours play in each.) 5.1 sound and full recognition of my multicore processor and my Graphics Card.

However Counter strike and Counter strike source have yet to load properly.

So if you already have a Steam account try accessing it through Wine. Playonlinux is a games front end for Wine. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Help can be found here for any one wishing to try this. Everything you need comes with Mint 13, just have download it from synaptic, Wine is comes already installed.

That is GREAT news! So you got them working and playing with good frame rates?
I'll add that to my list of games in Linux!

I don't know how to get the frames per second in Half-Life, but it's very playable. It slow to start, first 1 to 3 mins each time it freezes for a few seconds, does this several times....Then your off and running very smooth, I suspect this is due to Steam loading of my game rather than the game itself.

So far Half Life and Half Life Episode one, Lost Coast all seem to work well without any limitations. But I've had little luck with other games...We diffenitly still need Steam to port to Linux directly.

Lost Coast too? very cool! Lost Cost was originally a benchmark for hardware to see what could handle higher quality graphics and polygons.
So if your machine runs Lost Coast in Wine, then I'm looking forward to running them too.
Looks like you may have revived PC gaming for yourself!

I'm not sure about lost coast...but I think so, The Half Life 2 games all seem to run, I think I had it installed...Had to uninstall and reinstall a few before I figured out how PlayOnLinux was working with Stearm.

I'm having a very good time Playing HL2 about 8-10 hours of play now, never crashes or screws up...5.1 sound...the works! LOL

I've started the Lost coast DL, So I'll be able to confirm that one way or another...

Some things, like Games, as still touchy, and not where you would expect it, some older game do well some newer don't.

Counterstrike, counterstrike Sourse, neither run. both install and try to launch, but just dump you back in Steam...which good for a failure...":O}

Half Life2 Deathmatch won't load. Day of Defeat will! But it's a Multiplayer and nobody is home.

Yes Lost Coast loads and plays quite well. Comes with a GPU stress test, 115 was my score, but I have evrything at stock today, another 90F+ day...

Day of Defeat should run with bots if you host the server yourself. It may lag the game a bit, but you can play against AI.

115 is a great frame rate for Source games!

Yeah, it's been crazy weather here at home. (I stayed home yesterday not doing well) and it was hot, then it rained, then it was hot again. Uggg I hate when it's humid.

thats not bad at all! we will have 100+ for the rest of August and through September.... yesterday it was REALLY BAD! I was hot inside even with air conditioning.... totally sucks!

I could use a tutoral on how to install Doom3... just whenever you can find the time....seem to have your hands full at the moment.! ":O}

its been a while and I couldn't get it installed on Fedora 16.
you should be able to download an .rpm file and Mint should install it.
Those are only the files required to play it on linux but doesn't include the game files.
There are instructions on which .pak files you want to copy from the disc to the base folder in /doom3/base

I'll look up a good tutorial because I wanted to play it in Linux too.

On water or air at 90F they all start to crumble...on air or water they die and are re-born as stock parts.... God doesn't humor the proud, but showth mercy upon the stock part that abidth within its limitations...

90F+ is pretty much the sum total of those limitations...

My God! how do they run a computer on Fearking MARS!?
