I'm not sure if Quake Wars is considered "ancient" but it works fine in Mint 13.
It was pretty easy to install and ran really well on high settings.

Like I've said in the past, I'm a totally different gaming consumer because I enjoy a huge variety of games. Old and New.
There's always a bonus with older games:
1. cheaper
2. patches and bugs fixed
3. run great on older or newer hardware

Newer games:
1. very expensive - $30+
2. can have bugs
3. can require hardware upgrades

One example is Battlefield 3... requires Windows 7 and a direct X 10 video card. For some people this requires purchasing Win7 and maybe a new video card. That could be $200 not including the price of the game.
What do I do? I wait at least a year before I buy a game.
Its almost been a year since Skyrim was released and I havn't purchased it yet. I've seen it as low as $30 and maybe I could buy it used for less.

Since I play a lot of older games and different genre's... my stock of games is in the 200's not including online flash/facebook games.

So I have years of games to play without any major upgrades or problems.
I'm hoping to continue that process with Mint and it will save me Operating System costs in the future.
I already have several copies of Win 7 and it will probably last another 10 years.
So if I HAVE to play a new game, I'll stick with it. Otherwise, Winblows is slowly finding the way-of-the-dodo

So far, I LOVE it!
I'm not really doing anything fancy with the GUI, but my number of playable games is increasing every week.
The only problems I've seen is related to playing Windows games in Wine.
Everything else seems to function pretty good.
I even got my video drivers to recognize both of my screens. For some reason it won't stay.
Otherwise, those strange Mint 12 networking symptoms are totally gone. Who knows what the deal was. I'm glad I got it working on USB

You have way more experence than I not to mention an education in Computing....

So you are well situated ti understand what Mint 13 has meant for me. In Linux as a whole almost any problem I had was beyound me, I'd need help!

In Mint I usually only need help with something I've not done before... In Linux, the solution was usually so convoluted that I would get it done and forget it. I'd try to keep notes, but time would past and so would my abilty to understand my notes!

In Mint few things need such special attention... When they do, well, Mint has earned my paitence... What I don't have now, Ubuntu and Mint are hard at work on!

You let me know if you find any tricks for regular users.
I want to know Mint as well as I know Windows so I can help anyone who is new to Mint.

Ok, mostly what I've spent my time learning is desktop configuration...I like things to be beatuful if I'm going to spend my time with them...In life, I have to take what comes like everyone else!

In Mint...Things are different! ":O}

I'd be happy to tell you how to do anything you might like to try your self... Then I have one or two things I'd like you to show me... Like installing new themes... I've tried, just can't figure out quite what they want.

Very nice wallpaper!
I also use 4 desktops at the bottom. I usually Ctrl+Alt+arrowkeys to change from one desktop to the other.
did you know there is a "hot spot" for changing desktops too?
I like your program shortcuts on the right side. I have mine on the left and its kinda annoying!
I'm also having a problem keeping all of my game shortcut in the same place.
Wine puts them in "other" on the start menu.
But some games install a shortcut in "games"
Some put a shortcut on your desktop....
I want one place

Go to Menu>Preferences>Cinnamon Settings>Panel.

From here you can choose how many tool bars you want. Go back one and choose Themes and most desktop settings you will want.

If you look at your tool bar you will see a small up arrow. If you press it it will give you a selection of panel settings and applets. You must place the panel in the Edit mode to work with Icons in the panel...it can be tricky getting what you want, not buggy, just..well tricky...you'll need to play with the settings a bit to see how it works, it's a bit awkward, but gives decently flexible results...(Ubuntu is driving me nuts...no menu! ARRRRK!)

You can also reach Panel Settings from the "up arrow" menu.

I'll bet you were hoping I'd actually know something useful!

I'm just not that kinda guy!

(Oh! Look! Pretty, it sparkels! LOL )

yeah I found that too. Pretty cool and simple controls.
I accidentally turned off everything on the bottom bar but found it was easy to turn back on by choosing defaults.

I use my lower Right as "Hot" I seem to hit it by accident less...":O}

If you go to Panel up arrow, then to panel Settings, make sure you have "Panel launchers set to draggable. Close. Then hit the big arrow again and this time choose

Panel Edit Mode, you panel will change color and none of your launchers will work as per usual. This is a good thing!

This lets you drag your Icons left and right. But they are grouped and so are moved as a group... I've gotten past this...but can't remember how I did it!

If your interested I mess about, probably will anyway now that I realize I don't remember! ":O}

While in Edit mode you can drag and drop from upper to lower panel and back...it isn't smooth but it serves to do the job if you tell it enough times! (you have to restart Cinnamon at times so if do something and nothing seems to happen restart Cinnamon and see if you get what you want.

OK! ":O}

I found it! You just single click on the Icon (in Edit mode)you want to move, it will stick to your cursor until you click it into its new spot! I like working in MINT! LOL

Now when you click on an Icon it won't work....that's because your panel is a funny color to remind you are in edit mode. Turn off Edit mode and Icons are properly disciplined and in good order.

Steam Games...No Desktop or menu Icons, you have to go through Stearm each time...Icons on desktop are bricks.

Cool, I'll have to mess with edit mode again.
I remember steam doesn't create shortcuts for you. When you install a game in windows it will ask if you want a desktop shortcut, but its easy enough to just open steam and run it from favorites.
Did you know that you can add other non-steam games to the steam client?

most of my games are NON steam games.
I know there are steam versions but I have the retail version or the downloaded DRM free version.
I am going to try Battlefield 2 again tonight and then in the morning I'll try Crysis.

That's great. I've wanted to buy an older game or two, not to old, Crisis would be about perfect...But I'm afraid to spend the money and then find out I can't run it.

Half-life, the orignal, loads in a flash! Runs perfectly ":O}

I got Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis Wars for $10 on Amazon and it was a download. And they don't require Steam.
Half Life 1? awesome!
There are literally 1000+ mods for HL1
One of my favorites is Sven Coop because you can play the campaign with your friends!
