Borderlands is WORKING!!!
I just tried it again today an no securom error.
It just launched all by its-self!!!

There is some lag in game, not sure why...
I have messed with all of the video settings and nothing seemed to make it happy... and I noticed in the system monitor that its using 100% of my CPU (I have an AMD 3 core, so one of the cores was maxed out).

Otherwise, it IS playable, just not much above 20 frames per second.

Did you see the last picture? Borderlands was having some artifacts with outlines of the models... totally weird!!

I hesitate to install the new version of Wine because the 1.5 version I have won't show fonts in Steam!!!???
Version 1.41 will but strange how the newer version has a problem.
Now if you have the retail version, then instal it with Winetricks and the new version of Wine, but make sure to install the Windows Libraries.
That was the trick for me!!!

How do you want to do this?

My PlayOnLinux guide and Steam guide go through all the steps to prepare Mint 13.

Besides that, I copied my Borderlands backup to the steamapps folder and launched Steam

Then Launched Borderlands....

besides the securom problem that is how I got it working.

I recommend creating a new Virtual Drive for Steam and starting over with my tutorial.
Download the Windows Packages very carefully because that is where I had the most problems.
I even rebooted Windows after each one just to be sure.

I'm pretty sure it requires Dot NET Framework 3.5 service pack 1

I had the most problems with Dot NET Framework 2.0

At one point the Dot NET Framework 2.0 would keep giving me errors. After doing research and not finding a solution... I went ahead and started over with a new Virtual Drive.

I'm sure your video drivers will cause some problem too...

Would you like a list of steps for each Package one-by-one?

Sorry dude, but I'm afraid that's what it will take. I'm more than happy to dump my current install of Borderlands and re download and start over. But I will need an all inclusive step by step. So will those who come after me.

Remember people will come here for this guide. You can't just say, read my other guides... not fair I know, but they won't do it. What people want from a guide is security. The knowledge that YOU know what your doing, so they (I) don't have to.

Step by step will win you a following. Make a guide so that the reader is NEVER in doubt as to "how to do" and "what to do next."

as you would explain it to a little child. The less you assume about the readers knowledge the better your guide will be. The Devils in the details.

Here's every reviewers and guide writers worst flaw. They forget that quite often the reader really wants to do something he totally lacks the background to do.

We turn to guides so we don't have to read previous articles or spend massive amounts of time learning all you just spent time learning.":O}

Kinda depressing huh? ":O}

That is basically what I did in my tutorials.
The only part I couldn't tut-out is how each Windows Package installs.
I got many different errors and had to start over... then got another different error.

I don't fully understand what Wine & PlayOnLinux is doing when installing Windows Packages and "if" they are successful.

So all I can do for you on that part is write out one package at a time and tell you to reboot Windows and go to the next package.

If you get an error, then we halt, trial-n-error, research and then back to it.
That is what I had to do. It Requires a little bit of instinct but also stubborness to try it again and again and again until you get a consistent error or success.

Thats kinda depressing because in Windows you don't have to do that very often (go ahead and quote this Chrisbard), it does happen, but not so much.

I honestly think most people trying to use Linux are Power Users migrating from Windows because of a personal, financial, political reason. Or they are just having fun doing something new.

So most of these power users know the basics of Windows and have done their time researching & troubleshooting.

This is why I chose Mint because it has a Windows XP appearance and likeness when operating it.

So I hope it makes the transition easier.

Maybe we could do our Borderlands installation via chat so I can help you troubleshoot.

Don't download Borderlands again. If you have a complete download in the common folder in steamapps, just cut and paste that to your desktop for now.

I recommend that for all of your Steam Games because you won't have to download them again.

I'm having real difficulties understanding the files Steam and PlayOn have created, it seems an endless loop at times. I "think" I just grasped my problem, see pics, Playon has divide my games between Valve and non valve as to where they are located

I have time. So I would like to do this in the forums if thats OK with you. Then others can at lest get a feel for the process and perhaps add to our small store of knowledge.

Borderlands has been copied to my desk top. I have a dozen back ups of all my games, I can pluck them from my external back up...other wise I don't have room on my main drive to duplicate my games...

Ah yes, All the game under Daniel are Source games.
All the games under Common are other games from other engines.
That is why you have to back up all of steamapps

I'll start a new thread about Wine packages. I'll write a summary and then start you on your first package. Then when we are done maybe I could make a tutorial of it...

Your backup drive is probably better, but slower.
