Valve/Steam beta news

"...private external beta for 1,000 users sometime in October." Not sure exactly what that means.

TWO is that it shouldn't be me...although if we have one guy who knows stuff I'd tag along with pleasure!!

Exactly, if they don't respond... I'll wait for the release.
If they DO respond, then I'll be beta testing my HEART out

I know they are focusing on Ubuntu and Mint is Ubunu-based, so it should work.

Well there can't be to many Linux users on Steam...given the difficulties people face at this time...so I think we may have a shot.

Well, it looks like Valve have chosen 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for the beta.

Very close cousin, I'd be amazed if Mint 13 didn't do whatever it needs to do to have this work in Mint...this may become Ubuntu's bread and butter...if things work out.

Interface is different, Ubuntu is more Tablet in it's approach, But from what I understand the code is the same or very near, We get all our updates or most of them from Ubuntu Precise. Mint is mostly about stable Unbuntu and Cinnamom desktop.

But you know my limitations in understanding these things.":O}

I would say Mint is the same as Ubuntu on the back end and Mint is just a GUI layer on top for the front end.
Mint prettied up the GUI so it is more Winblows-like.
That is why I chose Mint... for users coming from Winblows environment that want to try Linux and still feel at home.

Well, Valve look like they've opened their Linux Steam Client Beta Application (link: Valve Linux Beta Survey). It would seem that they're targeted experienced Linux users only at this stage, as they claim that "We are primarily interested in experienced Linux users."

I suspect that users will need to run Ubuntu 12.04, but the games are rumoured to be Left 4 Dead 2(initially), Serious Sam 3, Portal and Team Fortress 2.

I filled out the survey.
Hopefully a "seasoned" Linux user with modern hardware and multiple monitors will be good enough.
I'll definitely let you guys know if I get selected for the beta

Not the best survey to get what they want. I said 64 bit, but I run in both.

I said Mint, but I'd have Ububtu installed and I know how to get things done in Ubuntu.

I think the people they really want are those like Boo. Boo you'd be happy to install ubuntu and grab a bit more RAM if you needed to or pretty much do whatever they wanted you to to get in the trial...right?

So why isn't this survey looking for Boo?
