Steam Tells me where to go!!

As I was completely unfamiliar with Steams arcane procedures for reporting problems, I ended up with 4 answers, three were Identical, the 4 th a bit different. I post them here that those who wish may review them and perhaps assist me once I have time to really look at them:

Number 1.

Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

If you are running in Windows Vista or Windows 7, please completely exit Steam, and right-click on the shortcut which you use to launch Steam and select "Run as Administrator."

If you are running in Windows XP, take the following steps:

1) Exit Steam.
2) Go to the "Start" menu, select "Run", type "regedit" and click "OK".
3) Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VALVE
4) Right click and select "Permissions"
5) Check the "Allow" boxes for "Admin" and "System" for both "Full control" and "Read".

The remaining steps apply to *all* versions of Windows.

Then, verify the game's files at least once:

Title: Verifying Game Cache Files (GCF)
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_a...2037-QEUH-3335

NOTE: There may be files that fail to validate. This is normal and can be ignored.

If the issue persists, you may also need to manually run secondary installers required by this game.

First, exit Steam entirely.

Please download and install the latest DirectX update, available here:
Download: DirectX End-User Runtime - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Also, please download and install the latest version of PhysX, available here:
NVIDIA DRIVERS 9.12.0613

Then, please install the latest Visual C++ run-time components, as described in the following article:
How to obtain the Visual C++ 6.0 run-time components

If you have not already done so, please install the following .NET framework software packages:
Download: .NET Framework 3.5 Service pack 1 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details
-and-
Download: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Web Installer) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

You may also try the steps outlined in the "Games do not run after 'Preparing to Launch' FAQ:
http://support.steampowered.com/kb_a...6218-USFX-5568

As well as the "This game is currently unavailable" FAQ:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...4595-WEXN-6831

If the issue persists and this game is not made by Valve, further support for this title is handled by a third party support department:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_cat.php?id=87 . Otherwise, please reply to this ticket if you still require assistance.

========= Please enter your reply ABOVE this line =========

Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

We apologize about the delay.

Please try the following.

For PC Users:

Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

The \Steamapps\ folder and Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer.

Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

For Mac Users:

Please exit Steam and go to the folder Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Steam

Delete all of the files in this folder except for SteamApps.

Restart your computer.

Launch Steam and re-test the issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

Note: If you are using Lion please do the following to enable your Library folder:

1. Open Terminal
2. Type chflags nohidden ~/Library
3. Close Terminal

You should see the Library folder available through the Go menu on the menu bar while holding down the option key.

If the issue persists, make sure your network is optimized for Steam:

I recommend doing this step first because it will run and update Steam all over again. Your steamapps are backed up anyways, so if they get messed up you can do it all over again.

Step 1:
Delete all Steam program files in your PlayOnLinux Steam Virtual Drive

Step 2:
Download SteamInstall.msi from Steampowered.com

Step 3:
Open your PlayOnLinux Steam Virtual Drive and click on Miscellaneous
Then click on run an executable

Step 4:
Find the SteamInstall.msi and open it

Step 5:
Folllow the steps for updating and installing Steam

Step 6:
Login and check each game for updates and launching

What a Goose chase!!!

As for all the other Winblows steps, we'll wait until last resort. We can do the registry in PlayOnLinux and maybe do the permission fix, but I would have to try it at home first.

Its funny how they don't tell you why this happens???
I didn't have to do any of these steps.

I would wait on the verify cache too... seems extensive and redundant.

Verifying while it does let you feel your doing something, really doesn't do anything. This IS Steams problem! I'm not asking them to run in Linux!! I just asking them to make my game launch-able! I told them that! Launch and I'll take care of the rest...seems it's more than Steam can do! AND They USE to FREAKING LAUNCH!!

As far as I can tell, Steam is working fine. Its the games that you are having problems with. I doubt contacting Gearbox Softwar or Crytek would help you either.
They will always say "our game is developed for Windows or Mac, anything outside those two is in your own hands"

Honestly I recommend sticking with Retail games. I know Steam has some GREAT deals, but you can buy retail games for pretty cheap at amazon.com and newegg.com
You can even stop by the Local Target & Walmart and look through the $10 areas for some games. Its limited, but still exist.

My retail games seem to be working better than Steam games for now. Except Crysis of course.

I let this set for a day and will pick up on it tomorrow. I got Crysis 2 back. if you remember the color was so bad as to be undecipherable. I updated to 4.1.8 I was mistaken earthier, the first time I just updated to 4.1.7., which I may go back to.

Modern Warfare is quite a bit better, perfect at times, glitchy at others. Riddick is perfect as are all half life except one or two minor ones. Black mesa an amazement.

When I play Cry 2 it will crash, but it's a Wine crash...we need better wine...":O}

I'm glad some of your games are working. Not a total waste.
Have you noticed any differences between 64-bit and 32-bit?
Or does everything install and update the same?

Unsurprisingly really. You're asking them to support an incomplete Windows API wrapper. Their response is always going to be "Unsupported". Steam is completely reliant on Wine to do things for it, so if things break between Steam and Wine, you're on your own.

I note that one of the links to troubleshooting specifically mentions this:
Quote:
Warning
Steam Support does not provide support for running Steam on Linux.

Steam is not natively supported on Linux, however many users choose to run Steam with loaders such as Wine. If you are experiencing this error with a loader, you may want to disable the Steam Community Overlay in Steam's settings. Since Linux is not supported, disabling the feature is most likely a permanent workaround. For instructions on how to disable the Steam Community Overlay, please see the The Steam Community guide.

Once again thank you Aedan! The thing is, I don't think this IS a Wine problem! They use to launch! I use to be able to work toward getting them to run. Now SSteam has some security that's not even supposed to be there blocking everything I do! I still think this is a Steam problem, not a user problem! My other games launch! Cry 2 now launches, Just the Crysis 1 games have this problem.

But Aedan's probably right...LOL

I'll try the disable community thing.

Looks like you turned it on.
Are you sure you turned it off?

I installed Crysis from the retail copy and it installed just fine.
It launches with no security problems and I can use all the menus.
But, of course, it crashed before the plane drop off the Island.

I can't find it, not in Steam games or on line. I can turn off support in each individual game, but I'm not sure that's what they are talking about!??

(Right click, on game avatar/icon in your library select properties) So i'm going to try that.

Right now I'm doing something backwards as hell just to see.

The latest POL version does NOT have a Default V Drive. So I decided to try this.

I created a drive with everything in it. Then I found where Riddick keeps it's non steam files and duplicated that with Cry 2 ( copied from my backup/extension drive.)

Had POL give it a short cut and tried to launch....as you know no go... So I added Steam to the Cry 2 virtual drive...that's when stuff started to happen! LOL

Steamed installed and jump to to get Cry 2 downloaded into my new Cry 2 Drive. I don't know what it makes of the folder already there, I'll check my progress...

What I'm hoping to get is access to the Games ( Cry 2) V-drive as I don't think it does games any good to load up the Steam V-Drive. I don't think Games have access to what is in the steam V-drive... I hope that finally came clear.":O}

I think I know whats happening.
Every time you want to install a new game, you open PlayOnLinux and click Install.
Then you find the game on the list and install, but PlayOnLinux is installing another steam client in a new Virtual Drive.
So now you have 3 Steam Clients each in their own Virtual Drive when you only need one.

Try this.
Only use one Virtual Drive and restore your common folder in steamapps from each game into the steamapps in that one Virtual Drive.
Now you should be able to install and update Crysis, Riddick and Borderlands in one Steam Virtual Drive. You can also have Half-Life 2, Black Mesa and more all in one drive.
This may simplify things.
Next time you want to download and install a game, open Steam first, browse for your game and then install from Steam, not from PlayOnLinux.

I found this while downloading Borderlands, you can turn off Steam community from the task bar Icon of each Game as it installs on POL
