Using Wine tricks to inmstall Borderlands

I thought I'd give this a try as I'm getting nowhere trying to get past steams securom Security software that prevents my Borderlands from opening. I'm doing this in 64 bit, will try 32 later today.

This will still use Steam, regrettably, but as the Damn Securom is flaky and by report, will simply go away at some unknown point, I thought I'd try this to kill time... Downloading now, will report of course upon my experience. Please offer any suggestion you might have while taking this approach. Or any experience you may have with it?

How many times have you downloaded Borderlands?
I've never tried installing it from scratch! I only have my windows Steam backups.

so even after downloading from scratch, you still get the Securom error?
That doesn't make any sense!
Getting the warning because I restored a backup makes more sense, but not from a brand new download and install.
Ironically I've ran 3 games that use Securom and they ran fine. The only one that gave me the error was Borderlands because it uses Steam.
The othe two... Crysis and Fallout 3 didn't error the Securom.
Crysis would install and run all the way up to the initial Parachuting from the plane and then crash.
Fallout 3 runs GREAT!
NOT FAIR SECUROM... NOT FAIR!!!

64 bit with Wine tricks or POL proved just to problematic. Just to many essential files in POL and tricks won't install or won't install properly in 64 bit, many even refuse to try just saying that it won't run in 64 bit system.

So yesterdays efforts with Winetricks and 64 bit Mint is a wash.

Today is all about Mint 13 in 32 bit format. Just began the effort. As Booman points out it would be much quicker to install Borderlands from back up files.

But the reason I'm taking extraordinary measures is to try and get past STEAMS incompetence in selling games that they cannot deliver to download due to Securom DRM, which should never have been there in the first place. Steam even says that part of IT'S job is to take care of DRM for you, boy, did they!

So here's how start up went. I skipped recording a few obvious steps in Steam install. Once you reach your game in steam, just click install. This will not install your game in steam. If it hasn't been previously installed, it installs it from steam, not to Steam.

Hopefully Borderlands will then access the support files I've loaded to Wine trick's default Virtual Drive...*

*(See: Booman's Tutorial on Winetricks and PlayOnLinux, Front Page)

weather I'll still be blocked by Securom, seems likely, but what's a poor boy to do!?

When you click "install" all Steam does is retrieve the files and downloads them to the Borderlands folder in Steamapps/common
Once its done, you will have to launch it once to install the Direct X files and Net Framework. Borderlands will try to automatically install these, but will probably unsuccessful in Linux. Hence my Windows Packages Winetricks & PlayOnLinux tutorial.
All Windows games will install the Direct X & Dot NET Framework for you, but in Linux it helps to already have installed.

When I ran Borderlands after these steps it started popping up with a Securom error. So I had to go research what that was all about.
I almost gave up because there was no fix for Steam or Wine. But I tried it again the next day and it launched all by itsself.

Did you launch from a separate Icon made by Wine tricks?

Nope, I didn't use Winetricks for this one. I did all the Packages with Winetricks on the Default Wine, but installing Steam and Borderlands was through PlayOnLinux.

It was only two steps for me:
1. restore my Borderlands files to Steamapps/common
2. launch Borderlands and wait for it to finish Direct x install.

Well I've done the "Restore Borderlands" thing, so if this doesn't go I'll try dumping it and re downloading it through steam as you did, might try the restore once more before I do.

I just thought of something else....
Do you launch Borderlands from the PlayOnLinux shortcut or do you launch it from Steam?
I always launch my games by double-clicking it in Steam.
I would always open steam first.

This could be your problem because I wonder if PlayOnLinux bypasses the Steam client and just launches Borderlands?
Or PlayOnLinux launches the game and Steam at the same time which could cause a problem because Steam needs to be launched first.

Interesting...for all I know it's ready to run very well, if securom would let it, Same with Crysis 1, I was doing OK a working with it, then it just decided it needed some added security...

But it opens a different version of Steam. if you click the Separate POL or the Wine tricks Icon you get a steam that ONLY has one game installed.

Next time you launch, start with Steam.
Even close it and Launch it again to make sure Steam doesn't need updates. Otherwise you may see that update error.

Then once you KNOW Steam is updated and open, double-click Borderlands to launch the game.
Somehome Steam is related to the DRM of all the games because without Steam running you can even launch from the games .exe file.
I've tried it, doesn't work

Totally normal. If you install more Steam games with this virtual drive then they will also show up in Steam too.
But since you only want to use Borderlands, then just leave it the way it is.

After some reading on WineHQ, you only other hope is using a No-CD Fixed .exe + associated files to launch Borderlands.
These are considered illegal because they strip away the DRM securities.
Use at your own risk of course...
I would rename your original borderland.exe first before using the No-CD fix

First I've heard of this approach, I have Zero reservations about using this on a game I bought if I need to to make it work....So tell me now, how do I do this?

I do remember something from when I was trying to install a game from DVD . it offered something or other that they disapproved of, but would let you try, but when I did, it didn't work, they gave the wrong code to enter!.
