I took some screenshots of the black marks that float around. As I move, they move. Here is the link for my photobucket album:

OK how do you know that's the best choice of drivers? I ask as I'm using 313.30.....for no particular reason other than that was the highest number on the list.

Hopefully you have other and better criteria for your choice?

I put mint 13 cinnamon back on, because that's what it was tested with. When I go into synaptics and type in "nvidia", it doesn't show a 313. It only shows 310 or 304 experimental.

Ah Yes, I had the exact same problem.
Those are shadow artifacts!
The only way to make them go away, is to turn down the shadow quality, or just turn it off completely.
Kinda sad because shadows look awesome in BF2, but not a huge sacrifice because the game still looks really good....

I don't know its the "best" but almost all of my games are running really well on 310.
As far as Steam is concerned you should always update the drivers, but remember I'm still a Windows guy...
I'm used to using the same driver as long as games work.
When a game doesn't work or has problems, then I look for driver updates.
Bad habit for Linux, good habit for Windows.

I turned off the shadows, and they are still there. I'm just wondering if it has something to do with the dll files. I am using the 3 disk set and the dx files are from 2-2005. I don't know if the dvd .cab files are any newer, or if that would even make a difference.

Oh! Poor Crazy! ":O}

Use System update. Click on "Edit>software sources> Additional drivers. It can be slow to load so wait a few seconds.

There you shall find a selection perhaps more to your liking ":O}

You really don't need to return to Mint 13. 14 IS the Better OS as far as I can tell, I lost nothing moving from 13 to 14. The only reason I comment on your choice is that Mint 14 constantly updates and keeps up. Mint 13 will fall behind over time....besides.... 15 will arrive one fine day! LOL

I know it sounds strange, but I really think 13lts is a little faster than 14. I will reinstall 14, and try again. I think there is a major conflict with mint and my system hardware. You can game on wine with onboard sound, right?

Hey! For all I know Mint 13 might be a bit faster! ":O}

In Mint 13 you want to go to you main menu. Look for something call "Additional drivers" Click on it and a Nvidia driver apt will open and install your Nvidia drivers. I don't know if this works with Non Nvidia cards. But you will probably, not at all sure of this, only get the same choices you revived in Software manager or Synaptic. But it's worth a look.

In Both 13 and 14 I use PlayOnLinux as a Wine wrapper. POL GREATLY increases the number of games you can play.

POL takes a little bit of getting use to, but it works! Big time!

I actually haven't installed any game without a wrapper for Wine.

I also "Occasionally" use Crossover and Wine Tricks. They do the same thing as POL...but in my opinion do it far less well and work with far fewer games.

Here's a tip! ":O}

Booman is our big time game Guru. If he can't get a game to go...he hasn't had enough time with it yet!

Or sadly...it won't go...yet. Everything is improving so fast that a game I couldn't load a year ago now looks and runs great.

POL is in constant update. If it's a directX 9 game in will almost for sure run, one or two haven't, but most jump right to it!

Mint 14 comes off a Ubuntu Base. It strives to remain about 6 months behind Ununtu, using the delay to gain stability... But Mint has also developed it's own user interface and I think it looks and feels great.That's Mate and Cinnamon. I prefer Cinnamon, many like Mate better. They are Ubuntu, but with a different face on the desktop.

Boo is here nearly every day and like me, loves to help others find what we have found.":O}

You might give it a try when you have time. There are few things Boo and I enjoy more than showing someone Mint 14 Cinnamon/Mate! ":O}

I took your advice and installed 14, but with mate. I really do like mate, and miss gnome 2 lol. I need to better understand my wine errors to figure out what is going on, but no luck with that yet.

Crazyjust, I think you are doing every correctly.
I remember having strange problems with BF2 also.
Took me several installs to eliminate the strange artifacts and errors.

I actually didn't get rid of the black spots completely.
You can see them in my screenshots... but they are tolerable.

Another solution would be to install BF2 manually by clicking:
  • install
  • install a non-listed program
  • check all 3 options: (Wine version, Wine config, Packages)
  • Select Wine version 1.4.1 (if you have it already, if not install it from the tools button)
  • Wine configuration: set virtual desktop on the display tab
  • Packages: d3dx9, dotnet30, vcrun2005 (maybe install ALL the d3dx9....)
  • Install game
  • Run BF2 in virtual desktop to see if the proper packages are installed.
  • If it runs well and you can change resolutions, try full screen
  • install 1.4 patch
  • install 1.5 patch
  • Test with Wine 1.5.16 or newer versions of Wine

I'm writing all of this from memory, but these are the steps I take to install and test a game.
I have a feeling that Direct3D error is related to the DirectX installed from the CD conflicting with the DirectX we installed with PlayOnLinux.

Ok thanks. I will try that late tonight, or tomorrow after work. Lots to do lately. Do you think I should try to decline dx9 installation from the Game?

Its worth a try... I don't remember if it gives you a choice or not.
Either way, the manual installation will allow you to install the Wine d3dx9 before the CD version. Hopefully the CD version will see that DirectX is already installed.

I'm learning that most of the packages I habitually installed in the past are not always necessary.
So now I select newer versions of Wine and install the game first.
Then one package at a time if necessary.

Takes more time with the initial installation, but saves you time later when you have accidentally corrupted the Windows directories with conflicting packages.

It gives you a choice, but if you select no, it cancels the game installation. I order the complete collection which "should" have bf2 on 1 dvd. I will have that in the next few days, so I will see if it's any different.

Boo has a much better grasp of the inner workings of Linux than I do. I doubt that Mate holds very many surprises, as compared to Cinnamon. As Mate has the exact same underpinnings as Cinnamon. Only the desktop is different. The one thing I've learned is to keep trying things, Mostly as Boo mentions try various wines. I'm happy Mate floats your boat! Sail on! Sail on! ":O}

But be aware that if your working with Windows Steam...You can install a wine that works for the game, but that takes away some or all of Steams Printed word, showing only the Boxes. The odd thing is if you can remember what the box use to say and place your clicks properly...it will work!...Well....sometimes. LOL

Go ahead and let DirectX install from BF2. As long as you already installed the d3dx9 packages it should be ok.

Let us know if the DVD version is any better.

Maybe there is a way to delete the DirectX directories after you copy all the CD data and .cab files. Look for any folders related to DirectX and remove them or cut-n-paste them somewhere else.
I never tried that before...

Besides the black spots, was BF2 playable?
How was your frame rates?

Absolutely playable. How do I check the frame rates? It was good, but the spots are annoying.
