Battlefield 2 Guide

Until Battlefield 3 hits the clearance shelves or until you can afford Windows 7 and a Direct X 10 video card... you can always play the classic Battlefield 2 in your Linux Distribution.

Follow this step-by-step tutorial in order to play Battlefield 2 in Mint 13 with Play On Linux.

Battlefield 2 Guide

I also included the NEW 1.5 patch that includes Armored Fury and Euroforce expansion packs.

Leave us not forget that folks are hip deep into games of their own Boo. I've had people write to thank me for something I posted YEARS ago. One day you might hear from that guy! ":O}

Hello. I am very interested in installing bf2 on mint. There is a few things I'm not sure about. Is there no private messaging on here? I just joined today.

Welcome to the forum.
Glad you are interested in Battlefield 2
No private messaging, but we can go about it step by step as you follow my tutorial.
Its a long tutorial, but Battlefield 2 should run fine.
Are you on a desktop or laptop?

I'm on a desktop with mint 14 mate de. I have looked over and bookmarked the guide (how I found this site). Should I follow it like it is, or substitute with newer versions of apps?

I installed with just wine last night, but the terrain was mostly all white like snow covered. I have the old 3 disk cd set.

if you are using PlayOnLinux, follow the guide as it is.
If you end up having problems, feel free to post your errors or symptoms here.
Also, if it runs good, you can always try a newer version of Wine in PlayOnLinux.
I find that Wine 1.4 runs most DirectX 9 games really well.
I recommend updating your video drivers too.

Do you have a GeForce or AMD card?

Thats what I was using too.
I found that PlayOnLinux has a hard time asking for the next disc.
So I ended up copying all the discs to a folder on the desktop and installing from there.

1. create a new folder on your desktop: bf2
2. copy all of Disk1
3. copy only data.cab from disk2
4. copy only data.cab from disk3

Then follow my guide and install from the setup.exe in the folder you created on your desktop

I have an amd card hd5450 in this box. My windows 7 box ( has hd6550) and this box are on a kvm, due to gaming. I want to try it, and see that it works ok before I reformat. Hopefully I can have mint on both soon lol.

That's great news. I was just wondering about that last night if it would work.

Yeah, that would be cool. I initially did a dual boot with partitions:
Windows 7
Linux Mint 13

Eventually I was so satisfied with PlayOnLinux and my games that I decided to buy a solid state hard drive just for Mint 14.

I strongly recommend using PlayOnLinux.
Wine works by its-self but is much harder to install all the packages and configurations.
With PlayOnLinux everything is a sinch. Backing up and restoring is a sinch.
Even all the Windows packages and DLL's are a sinch.

I ran into quite a few wine errors. I finally got the game to run, but couldn't see it. big red square on blue desktop with the movies playing. I'm sure I made a few mistakes. I also don't know if 64 bit would make a difference with files or libraries. I formatted my win 7 box (32 bit), and am gonna install mint and try again tomorrow.

Yeah, I've seen problems with Mint 64-bit because you have to install the 32-bit libraries in order to run 32-bit programs like Wine and 32-bit games.
That is why I stuck with Mint 32-bit. Just easier in the long run.

Do you know how to install the 32-bit libraries for Mint 64-bit?

B-2 runs quite well in 64 bit mint. But I did have to have Terminal install 32 bit libraries.

I'm sorry, I really suck at search engines. But Aedan gave me an excellent set of instructions here in the forums. I tried to find it but had no luck...sigh

I'm having the same problems as before on 32 bit. I reinstalled, but installed mint 13 instead with mate de. I followed the guide exactly (the first time) and right after the mic settings screen, wine crash. The exact message is "Wine program crash Internal errors - invalid parameters received". Sometimes it runs, but sometimes I get sound through the movies with a bright red screen. When I do get it to play, the ground is white or really bright.I cant emulate a virtual desktop or wine errors immediately. This screenshot is all my video settings on high. I have been changing them, starting from all low, and it doesn't make any difference. I thought maybe it was the older versions, so I started over. I installed wine 1.5, and pol 4.2. I tried again, and same thing. Any thoughts? Thanks
