If it doesn't automatically mount, try opening Computer
Mint should list all the available hard drives on the left side (like winblows)
It should even list the name you see in Winblows
Just double-click it and Mint should mount it.
if not, then something else is going on...

Can see it and it's mounted but it can't access it.

Ok, I want you to click on the drive, get the error dialog, and THEN go to the command line and run the following:

Code:
mount
cat /etc/mtab
ls -l /media
ls -l /media/*
Post the results of that back here.

Permission denied huh?
Try sudo before you type the command
Code:
sudo ls -l /media/*
this will ask for your password and give you administrative access.

Technically the drives are not mounted, but Linux is seeing the partitions.
When you double-click them, they should mount.
When you double-click is there an error like "permission denied"?

When you sudo, it will ask you for your login password again, just to make sure that you aren't someone who happened to be walking by and tried to take control of your session or something, and also as a 'Mother May I' to make sure you really, Really want to sudo and do whatever it is you're about to do.

Good point. specially when messing with NTFS partitions. don't want to accidentally erase your whole windows install and programs.

Chrisbard is right! Live Linux doesn't have a password for root.
I usually create one just to be safe.
Gizmo? what is the best way to create a root password on Live Disk?

My bad Chris, first Linux I've heard about without a password...

Did you renounce MS and all it's works at install? You might have to recover your password!

(if it was up to me you would! ) LOL

he was asking about the "sudo" and when it asks for password.
Since he's running Live Linux off a flash drive, you never setup a root password by default.
But you can set it up. I have done it!

Chris have you tried:

Sudo>enter

Then when it wants your password leave it blank and press enter? Just a guess, but it might work.

Ah, yeah, I missed the part about it being a live cd.

When you sudo, just hit enter (no password) and it'll be happy.

I got one right!?

I'm sorry, I really don't know what to say this never happens to me!!

I'd be upset, but how likely is it that this would ever happen again?

Let' all just stay calm and wait for this moment to pass.
