The package is called "compiz"
Here is a short tutorial: Compiz Mint

I usually don't mess with those fancy eye-candy effects because it will slow down your games.

I need to read it closer. It looks like if I do it I can't undo it.

Its possible, I didn't read it that closely either.
If its a desktop managment, then you can select it at login and test it for one session.
Then logout and back to Cinnamon, Make, or whatever.

I do this with Openbox. Its a Windows management program that elminiates all the windows and eye-candy so you can squeeze a few frames per second out of your games.
When I'm done playing my game, I just logout and log back into Cinnamon.

I use to implement and install Compiz cube all the time, then Mint seem to lose out Somewhere around Mint 12 or 13. Now I just haven't bothered to see what would be involved.

Mint 14 still supports Multiple desktops and they are still available by Keyboard and Mouse click, they just slide though, no where near as much fun.

I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 14 64 bit last night and running it now. So far so good. Seems to boot faster.
I installed Chromium as it seems faster that Firefox. I would like a faster browser if there is one.

I mostly use Chromium but there are even more basic browsers for Linux.
Not sure if they will support all the "active x, flash, shockwave, CSS, etc" and plugins that all the main browsers support

LOL it's good to know how well linucs handle a desktop theme and games at the same time!

Windows does the same thing...
I turn off the Aero interface just to squeeze a frew frames per second out of my games. I even turn off any other services that I don't use.
Did you know Antivirus program can features a "game mode" where it uses less processing power to not interfere with your games?
Linux doesn't need an Antivirus.

If I could run every game in Safe Mode with Video/Audio drivers only... I would!
But that is the cool thing about Openbox desktop! Its just like a "safe mode" in Linux and your games are even faster!

In a way he is right...
I know Chis is having fun making jokes about Linux, but most people don't want to tweak their computer for games to play.
They just want to pop in the disc and watch it magically work.

Unfortunately that is hard for me to do because I own over 100 games ranging from 1990's DOS to 2011 DirectX 10.

There are still thousands of games to choose from in the PC world. In order to play them you will have to do a little bit of work.

I actually enjoy it because I learn more about hardware, software, security, networking and backing up. Hence the IT field I now work in!

If it was for tinkering with games I would never be in this field.

Boys boys, I remember a time when a windows update could make a mess, a very long time ago, and Daniel was pissed as he was getting it wrong more than the rest of us, and obviously in frustration he got mad and gave up on Windows. That is understandable. I was telling him back then that as linucs is strugling to be more like windows in all aspects the updates will also be more like the ones we had back then for windows. While linucs remains a child with a certain syndrome I can see why having a bootable pendrive with you at all times comes in handy. Still unhappy game creators blame linucs debugging for their lack of interest in creating games for linucs.

I haven't had a chance of testing windows8, I heard that it isn't as hyper as it was advertised but will make an opinion when I will have a chance of using it. Meanwhile for you guys enjoy browsing the web and watching videos on your linucs machines, clap with joy when the machine becomes unresponsive and keep dreaming that one day real games will be played on linucs systems.

Actually I'm playing games very nicely on Linux.
I know I have to jump through a bunch of "hoops" but its working great.
I just finished Hard Reset and was very satisfied with the gaming experience.... man the details were amazing!

I'm currently playing Back to The Future and its running ok. Some stutters here and there, but the graphics look GREAT!

So its not all internet and email for me, I'm mostly playing and testing PC Games... there are thousands to choose from!!!

As for Windows 8:
I've played with it a bit and its really Windows 7 with a new Start Menu.
Master the new tablety Start Menu and you will be fine! Nothing else new inside!

Yeah, isn't it cool?

you can make as many desktops as you want.
I used to have 4 desktops, but I found that some games have problems with the desktops when your mouse gets to the edge of the screen.
All of a sudden I'm on another desktop when I was playing a game.
So now I use two and some games I have to limit it to one desktop
