Why Gamers may...or may not....wish to install Mint 15...

I'll let my system update app do my talking for me... I wish I could say one way or another what this might mean in terms of compatibility... that will have to be taken up by wiser heads than my own...

I have just installed Steam on Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon. The install went smooth. But I did it all by point and clicking on the Steam site. Then clicking on prompts as they came up. Part of it was logging into the terminal. Couldn't tell you what I did in step by step detail as I am learning.
The hardest part of Steam was all the serial numbers to get the game to work. Reminded me of a previous nightmare getting a game to go on Steam.
I know I am rambling.

One sure advantage will be that Mint 15 Playonlinux will auto update when the system does. Same for WINE and Steam...I think! ":O}

Try opening Main Menu > Preferences > software manager then type "playonlinux" into the search widow at the top....Install and finds the new Icon under "Games" in your main menu...

Booman has a series of excellent guides for using Playonlinux to install your favorite directx 9 games

This will give you your best chance EVER to install most of your directX 9 games.

You can also install Steam with Playonlinux....":O}

If ya got any questions...well not much makes Boo happier to help folks game in Linux!

I just fill in here and there...":O}

I installed PlayonLinux and all the Wine I could find.
I got the free big download of Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun. I did get it installed but the game is choppy and not all the features could be enabled.

hey bigjohnson, first of all, where did you find the free vesion of Command and Conqueror? is it legal?
I definitely want to download it and try it out too.

Wine version if very important, but so are the Windows packages.
Sometimes the game will install DirectX or Dot Net Framework for you, but they are not always fully compatible with Wine.

I always suggest using Wine 1.4.1 first

Which Windows Packages (components) have you installed already? if any...

I always recommend:
d3dx9
vcrun2005
msxml3
mono210
physx

But give me a chance to read on WineHQ too...

After reading the rest of this thread, I'm not sure why you had to use the Terminal or serial numbers to get Steam running.
As far as I remember Steam downloaded as a .deb file and a double-click should have installed it for you.

Maybe you had to use Terminal to chmod it?

Also, the only reason you have to user serial numbers is to activate your game in Steam the first time. After that, the DRM stays with Steam anywhere you go.

Here is the Tiberian Sun link.
Command & Conquer Communications Center Community forums - Tiberian Sun with Firestorm Full Game Installer
booman, I don't know why I did what I did. I should add that I got confused.
The game was purchased from the publisher. I got serials from them had to use Steam got yet another serial number. It then worked.
I may have had to use terminal on the not Steam install.
All that gave me a brain hurt but I am glad I learned a little.
I do like Steam for linux!
I would be so happy to get Tiberian Sun to run on linux.

I installed all that booman listed in playonlinux. I think it loaded your suggested wine version. It did load faster a tiny bit less choppy maybe. No love on some of the buttons. But I have hope.
Would crossover work better on windows to linux games?
Oh, I did a bad thing and bought another linux on Steam game ie X3 Reunion. Looks good. I may like it once I get the space ship controls and joystick working right. Heck I did get through a stargate! :Yippee!
If Steam does anymore Linux I could go broke.

Oh, long ago I used to mod TS. Forgot most of how to do it. But....A lot of the game could be altered with Microsoft Word Pad or maybe note pad.

So you did get it working in PlayOnLinux?
But your joystick isn't working... that is a typical problem with Linux. My joystick worked with some games and didn't work with others.

CrossOver does all the same things PlayOnLinux can do, but it costs money.
It uses Wine just like PlayOnlinux. so I don't think you'll get any better results.
Did you research on WineHQ.org?

Yup, Tiberian Sun is working. It can be played sort of. Buggy. This needs more thought.
The joystick may have more features than the game. But it looks like I have control on all axis and the fire button works. Soon I may have to read the book.
