Adventures in HARDWARE!! Or... I only stubbed my toe, it's not broken!!

As a few of you already know I've been waiting on a new Graphics card. Aside from the rather obvious personal pleasure any new hardware seems to bring me I moved on a new card for several more compelling reasons.

ThunderRd, Booman, ChrisBard and I have undertaken to get as many first rate (not necessarily new) Games playing on a Linux platform as we can. Boo and I have been working in Mint 13. I've been working with Crysis and Crysis 2 and three Crysis games that came in-between 1 and 2.

I can load and view all the intros perfectly, but except for Crysis 2 They crash right at the end of the intro as the Game begins. Crysis 2 warned me each time I loaded it the my 8800 GTS could no longer be consider a gamers card!

But it would run for me, looked pretty good and then crash. My hope was that a new card would remedy that. And I still think I've got a shot!

When I booted to C-2 it went to s...! Colors were a mess and even the Setup menu flickered into and out of being a piece at a time, my mouse movement made the menu CRAZY!!

Color? how about all red , then all yellow...you get the messy picture.

But here's what I pin my fragile hope upon...When I first booted the Game I got the BAD bad card message again!. It still says my GF 8800GTS won't cut it! SO I looked around in setup trying to get it to re-identify my card, put all settings on the highest it would allow. Quite the game and tried again...No go same message...WORSES mess.

So I dumped the rat bastard and as soon as Borderlands ( Got it for 20 bucks and Wine Tricks say it can install it,so felt it worth a try!) finishes downloading I'll try again...See what it sees my card as at install. I'm still on the 295.49 and C-2 won't let me enable Direct-X 11. This is the first time I've heard of a game needling a reinstall do to improved graphics!? So we will have to see...

Something I liked right off, the reason my card sits at idel at around 38C today
(See pictures below...)

It's freaking adaptive! Goes up in a flash, comes down in bumps...":O}

I may need the new 3.0 Nvidia drivers. My half-life games all play well and it will benchmark...just haven't taken the time to let them run. Tomorrow, when my downloads finish.. I'll stay in touch.

All suggestions not related to my choice of OS will be gratefully considered! ":O}

Almost forgot! This in my new card

booman 26th September, 2012 11:24 PM

I'm glad yo got rid of that old card.
Sorry there have been headaches with the new card!
We'll get it worked out in time! I know that card will run anything you throw at it, so the culprit must be Nvidia Drivers or Wine.

I have had a LOT of success with Wine & PlayOnLinux with a bunch of games.
I'm keeping a list and doing more tutorials to post in the forum.
Please PM me with any new threads related to Linux and/or gaming.

I'm on my Mint 13 box every day now and have learned SO much about Linux. Its becoming my preferred OS. In time I hope to have mostly Linux and maybe one winblows box.

This is interesting and the reason for my confusion about how Nvidia was reporting my card. Look at the pic above YOUR last post, then compare to this pic with the 304.51 drivers...

ThunderRD! This is where I posted the pic I referred to in another thread! Why couldn't you find it? It was here all along! ":O}

booman 27th September, 2012 04:53 PM

Why is the Processor clock missing in this last one?

Daniel ~ 27th September, 2012 08:49 PM

EXACTLY!

Where did it go and why!? The remaining numbers remain the same, why drop 1/3 of your reporting?

booman 27th September, 2012 08:54 PM

that MUST be a bug with the driver and Linux... so strange!

booman 27th September, 2012 08:55 PM

Looks like you are officially a Nvidia driver tester for Mint 13 :rolleyes:

Daniel ~ 27th September, 2012 09:39 PM

Thank you for conferring my new title upon me...WTF!! LOL

booman 27th September, 2012 10:01 PM

maybe you should send your test results to Mint or Wine

Daniel ~ 27th September, 2012 10:28 PM

I don't having anything I could even laughingly call "Test results". Dude! I'm blind folded and just chucking darts at the board! Once in a while something yeps and once in a while something shouts Bullseye! ":O}

Riddic and MW just work or I'd be nowhere! I'm afraid it's up to you my man. I'm just following behind and trying to keep up.

booman 27th September, 2012 10:37 PM

I think your Nvidia Server Settings results is a symptom and your Steam Specs showing GeForce 8300 is another.
You could at least post those.
I would try a game that worked on your old card but doesn't work on your new card.
That is a good test. Post what happend with the new card and the versions of Nvidia drivers you used.

This is all I found on a GeForce GT 640m which I think is Mobile...

The only game that sorta worked before and now isn't is Cry 2. But I've done so many things tried and dumped so many times I couldn't at all say it's my card.

Half life 2 actually looks better, but that might just be me.
Riddic doesn't really test my card, but gives it a good run...flawless. I really don't think it's my card, it just Linux.... When you can run something I can't in Mint I'll take another look at my card.":O}

Top Stress temp in Furmarks is 70C at 69F ambient.

We know that the nvidia-settings app that you're using has issues reporting speed for Kepler and Fermi cards, as the clock generation is completely different. So, I'm not surprised that you're getting confusing reports!

OK but keep in mind that we need to stay positive if we're going to sort this mess out. In the best interest of our readers I will post a spirit lifter linux shot!

Good point Dan.
So far I've had mostly success with my games.
We have the same results with Half-Life 2 Deathmatch and Borderlands.
I havn't tried Crysis yet...
I'm going to make an online chart of my results with Mint 13. I'll update it as I go.

Daniel ~ 28th September, 2012 06:35 PM

If you can get the Crysis and Crysis 2 to run or either one of them, I'll buy you a 20 dollar game! I'm serious! ":O}

Those two games would last me until Steam goes Linux! (Along with MW).

Same deals goes for the Borderlands duo.

As we know this of Nvidia I see my best course as working on other things until Nvidia straightens things out a bit.

BTW, I had an idea about what happened to Nvidia Settings when I first updated, I knew I shouldn't, so I backed up and then ran it again... At the very end theres a message that basically says that it's left some trash and if you want it removed type:

(Something about unused stuff to be auto removed)

I now have confirmation that if you do this, it will take out Nvidia-Settings.

Just so you know! ":O}

Sure! I'll get Crysis and Borderlands running since those are the only ones I have.
I really really really want Torchllight II

Daniel ~ 28th September, 2012 08:09 PM

Glad to see your motivated! ":O}

booman 28th September, 2012 08:53 PM

Oh I AM! On top of that, I plan to make it as easy as possible to run these games.
Of course there is only so much I can do...
I'm not going to compile my own distro to run them, but all the tools Mint 13 gives us should be enough.
