Running WCG through Boinc

Ok, for the more adventurous, you can also run the WCG project on Boinc.
Go to the Boinc website and download the version you need.
Boinc needs a little extra tweaking to set up the program to suit your machine, but once set, it should be fairly pain free.
Now that you have downloaded Boinc, you'll need your WCG Boinc ID info to "attach to the project". Go to your "My Grid" page at WCG, sign in and click on "my profile", and scroll down to the bottom. There you'll see your Boinc Account Key and Project URL. Copy those to notepad and save them.
When you install Boinc, it pop up a window that says "attach to project".
You''ll need to paste the URL in, then your account key.
It should connect to WCG and start downloading work units. You can set your preferences in the tabs at the top of the Boinc manager window.
Then you need to go to your "My Grid" page and Device Manager, and you should see a "Boinc" machine listed. Once again, click on "default" and it will open a page where you need to select your preferences on how the program runs.

I had to look that up.

Go to
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewDownload.do
and click on 'Click Here if you have already downloaded the BOINC Agent'
That should display your account key.
Ignore the reference to Linux. The key is cross platform.

got it sorted. need to log in before clicking your last link, then it's very easy...pretty much as easy as setting up the original client.

Yeah, that's the only frustrating thing to me. You have to log in every time you visit your "My Grid" page.

There seems to be. You can compare points per day per machine, and Boinc definitely comes out ahead.

Running WCG in Boinc is still a new thing to the project, and at some point I expect that they will do a re-assessment of points conversion.

I can make a comparison that the F@H team members will understand.

Running WCG in Boinc vs. running WCG in it's graphical "agent", is like running F@H in Console, as compared to running the graphical version of F@H.

Console/Boinc= lean, mean, no frills, fast crunching.

Me likes that!!!

On a side note!!
speaking from experiance... ( I use to be a pizza guy) why can't these guys call ahead or follow directions?!?! I just refused a pizza that I ordered over an hour ago. EVER time (no matter WHO I call) I have to meet the guy (err or gal sometimes) outside cuz they can NEVER find my house. This guy I found wondering the streets (about an 1/8 mile away) It's cold outside and now so is/was the pizza that I was going to get. I've had a couple of beers so I can't drive and go and get something. Time for Pizza hut I guess.

Thank god I went back to school!!!

Ok have set up and have BOINC in tool bar.

Do I delete the WCG agent or it that still needed?

BOINC reports 3.something or other completed.

WCG reports 92% done on WU

Let it complete and shut it down?

Can one leave everything at default as far time AM/PM, not sure how that works. in BOINC want 24/7 run and Wu download, is that default? Do want it to yield to games when playing, This is auto same as F@H?

Reminder frequency in BOINC, this does what?

Does "Weight" determain which (BOINC or WCG) client runs and what percent of the time?

let the wcg unit complete, and then remove the client from your machine, leaving boinc. i set the options to "always run", and it hasn't interfered with either my uses(gaming, etc), nor my wife's, and i have turned in quite a few units so far.

There is a good guide to the boinc client(called BOINC MANAGER) to be found at the following site:

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/manager.php

should answer any questions you have.

I realize that Dave":O}

I'm trying to get as much setup information as I can into the Topic. Many, especially in the beginning won't want to spend the time to sort through things.

Ok. You don't have to delete the "agent", just shut it down after it finishes that wu and run the Boinc version. I wouldn't run both at once.

You'll want to look through the preferences and set it to run the hours you want.
It should yeild when game playing. It uses spare cycles.
Reminder frequency is for dial up users. You can set it pop up a remeinder to connect every so often.
Weight comes in if you run more than 1 Boinc project. Weight has nothing to do with the regular WCG program.
I'll post a little more asap, with some screen shots.

To get to your Boinc preferences, once Boinc is installed and running, go to "my grid" on the WCG website and click on -device manager -device profile -Boinc devices profile -default. Set to your choices and save.

To run the program 24/7, leave Basic hours set to default. Choose how much hd space to allow it.
Under Advanced, you'll want to make sure "run while computer is in use" to yes. Under network usage- the higher you set the number, the more wu's it will queue up, but it won't send finished wu's for that set amount of days or hours, unless you manualy send by hitting "update" in the Boinc Manager itself.
I leave mine on 1.

I deleted the WCG client before you posted. BOINC doesn't seem to be running now. Hot to kick start it? Is the WCG client needed?
