well ive got a laptop I can put wcg on its a 1.8ghz P4-M with 1gb ram its only on for about 2/3 hours a day, having said that my main pc is only on 10 hours a day so I suppose every little helps.

If the screen is off is it ok to leave a laptop on 24/7?

should do the same or better than an a64 @ the same speeds. dothan's are quite impressive, really. I think "whatever" had one going on an A-open board.

Ah, but Dothans are Pentium-Ms.

By the looks of it he has a Pentium 4 M which is a Netburst based chip. Intel made the P4-Ms for a while, until they turned out to be terrible battery life wise, and then they stopped making the P4-Ms in bulk, and REMADE the Pentium 3, into the 130nm supercharged Mobile Pentium 3-M.

The MP3M was 30-40% faster clock for clock that the old P3-M, went all the way up to 1.2Ghz with stability and good temperatures. And even at that top speed, the battery life was exceptional.

Then the Pentium M was release, based on the MP3M, which was the best version yet (and the centrino chip).

You can tell I've been reading up on this recently lol.

Congrats dave!

P4-M wasn't a great performer and tended to run rather hot...

Good for a train where they've forgotten to turn the heating on in winter though.

Ah well, a Pentium M 750 is another story. Its just that you said Pentium 4, which is a very old, and quite frankly terrible chip.

As Aedan said, the Pentium 4-M was good for heating trains, but that heating takes energy... So a brand new full size P4-M would have a loud fan, burn your lap, and go through its battery in under an hour and a half of use.

Essentially what you have is a Pentium 3 based chip.

I just bought a Dell Latitude C400 with a 1.2Ghz MP3-M, and because of the MP3-M modifications of the P3M, its the equivilant of around a 1.8Ghz Pentium 4 M while giving 4 hours of battery life.

Your Pentium M is a step up again. They took the MP3-M, and applied DDR2, quad pumped FSB, futher optimisations, and a heap more cache to make the Pentium M, which at its heart is still a Pentium 3 (architecturally dating back to the Pentium Pro) one of the absolute fastest chips, clock for clock, ever made.

Its almost laughable that Intel has spent the last 5 years flogging the useless dead horse that is the Netburst archtecture, when the solution, was in the Pentium 3 that they had all along.

Pentium M is going to replace P4 as the next desktop chip in the Conroe core. Its a shame they didn't do it sooner.

The lower clocked chips, take my father's 2Ghz Toshiba 15" for example run ice cool, because though its a P4-M, they have rather elaborate cooling, alot of space in the chasis, and a low clock speed.

My brother's Sony Vaio 10" screen Centrino with a 1.4Ghz chip, runs hot enough to cause extreme burns due to its very small dimensions and its relliance on a heat pipe system to get all that energy out.

So, a P4-M can run cool, and a Centrino can run hot. But he <did> say P4-M. :P

As the ladies say, size matters most!

Actually, most ladies will tell you "size matters most, if you want to get pregnant."

Still single, DSIO? Or does the wife wear the pants?

Girlfriend for about 12 months. I'm waiting for her mother to die of diabetes or eat the chocolate cake that kills her. Then she's all mine.

She doesn't seam to understand that her daugher is 18.

My problems though, not yours. And by yours I mean the little freak looking at this over my shoulder. Yes, you with the suntan.

Its just finished its first WU in 6hrs 50mins so only a little slower than my main pc, the laptop got a little warm but not too bad, my last laptop had a P4 desktop cpu in it, that ran rather warm, it was a 2.4B if I remember right.

Anyway I think I might just shut the lid on the laptop and leave it chugging away 24/7, I dont like leaving my main pc on 24/7.
