Optical cable?

Is there any chance that optical cable to connect to the Web will ever be available to humble home user's?

I would have thought so, but I doubt it will be for awhile, but then again I dont know how much equipment is needed to turn the optical signal into something a computer can use so maybe I'am completely wrong.

Why? You pining for an OC-1 connection? OC-1 (OC = Optical Carrier) the smallest sensible connection for fibre. Small in this case means 51.84Mbit/sec...

Copper doesn't do badly, and is way cheaper than single mode glass fibre!

Well if you live in the denver area on this side of the pond you can get ftth (fiber to the home). Only in a limited area but i hear it is very very neat. Everything is across that fiber tel, cable, internet, ect.... I think they use multimode fiber. The cool plastic stuff.

Yes, I definitely need the 51.84 mbit per second bandwidth. Why? Because I'm a greedy pig. I want all of the Net and everything on it for me, Me, ME. And it better be free, Free, FREE.
