Question Cable modems and networking

New territory for me. Cable internet now available in my area. If I use a router, the service costs no more per month. This will be in my business. I want to have two computers share the same modem. One of the computers runs Win 98SE and the other XP Home. Can someone detail a step by step process to accomplish this or get me to a good link? I already have Cat 5 cables run to between each office (although they have never been connected). Thanks

Quint, I am a networking dummy. I also have 2 boxes online, one with 98se & one with winxp.
I just put an extra nic in the xp box ran the cable from the second nic to the nic in the 98se box and enabled sharing on the first local area connection. (the one connected to the cable modem on my xp box) You just need to go to "My network connections" and select "view connections" to see both connections.
I haven't set up file sharing though....don't feel like monkeying around with it.
I'm sure that setting up file sharing is easy if one took the time to know what they are doing, but if it's not important to you, then just internet sharing is a snap.

oh, and don't forget to renew your ip for the 98 box.
go to run - type in winipconfig - and then select renew. I think.

it is winipcfg not winipconfig lol I have to do mine once in a while if I clear my cookies. Hope this helps, Bodyman

Edit to add hit release all first then renew all then ok and you should be set.

The network card.

No stupid questions....the only thing stupid is not asking and finding out later that you really REALLY needed to know

There are a number of ways you can accomplish this. You mentioned you have a router... If it is a router/switch, you are probably much closer than you think already.

If not, Betty's method works fine... I did that when my router died, for about 2 weeks. The performance of the machine with ICS will not be as good, but it works.

If you have a router.... just plug in the cablemodem to it through the wan port, connect both machines to the router.... and you're done. If the machines do not connect to the internet, you will have to check network settings. But in a best case scenario, that's it.

Report back on the equipment you are running, and let us know how it is going.

I thought it was "ipconfig /release" & "ipconfig /renew"... or is that only on NT?

weeellll I know its the way I stated for windows ME & 98. The different os might be different. Go to start, run type in winipcfg and try it. It should come up with a box with the options I stated "release all & renew all" thats for ME thought give it a spin on yours and let me know if it works that way for you too. Thanks, Brad
