usb dsl modem for linux?

hi

i have a usb dsl modem; the Efficient Networks 4060 USB which came with bellsouth's dsl. so far i can't get it to work in any linux flavours; most wont even recognize that its there. the only way i could get it to work is by having another computer and have it be part of a lan (which i've done before). it would be great if i could get it working in linux. does anyone know of any drivers for it?

thanks,
barneygumble742

are you just using auto-detection?
i got mandrake 9.1, it has the option of setting up adsl modems, but i use my win2k to connect to via lan. expert mode perhaps

im 'ultra newb' when it comes to linux

yes the ONLY linux flavour that even recognized my usb adsl modem automatically was mandrake (version 8, i think). but what you said about win2k is exactly right. my previous setup was by having win98se connect to the internet and have redhat linux connect to my win98se box. even though mandrake might recognize my modem, i think finding the drivers for the modem and setting it up would be much more difficult.

thanks,

after a 3 years search for the 4060 linux drivers, i went to ebay and bought a westell 2100 dsl for $30. all versions of linux recognize it and i've never been more happier. the 4060...i forgot where i put it.

Have you looked under your bed?

Linux is more geared-up for ethernet modems and routers - which would explain why you had to wait so long.

Are you saying that you did have the driver, but can't find it now that you need it?

well the modem is a usb modem. and i spent a very long time searching for the drivers and i finally gave up. then last november or december i bought a ethernet ready dsl modem from ebay and linux works perfectly with it. also i read online that usb and linux still have to be worked out.

with the usb modem, i couldn't find the driver. with the new modem, i don't need any driver because its detected automatically and the only drivers i need are for the nic card which nicely come packaged with rh9.

no problems. i was just updating loose threads.
