Modem Problems

I have a ZOOM external USB modem V92 installed on an EPOX 8KHA+ mobo with an AMD 1600 XP. I am currently overclocking to 145mhZ FSB (1523 mhZ oc). I'm pretty sure I only have USB1.1 support on this board.

This modem is terrible. Very slow connect speeds if it connects at all. Is this due to overclocking, USB incompatibility, or just a crappy modem?
Thanks!

In my experience, the ZOOM modems tended to be crap; bear in mind that my experience is near to 10 years old, though. Ever since I got my USR Courier HST, I've not had anything else.

If your mobo doesn't have a PCI bus lock, then overclocking might be your problem. Have you tried to set things back to the defaults and see if it works?

The 8KHA+, one of my favorite boards of all time, does not have PCI locking. At 145, your PCI bus is going at over 36Mhz. Some people have commented that the USB tends to crap out around then too. As Gizmo recommended, try lower your FSB to stock and see if it works any better.

To quote Roberto Viencente after he signed a wrong scorecard to lose the tourney, "I am a stupeed".
I put the system back at stock (133mhZ FSB) but found no apparent improvement. Then I remembered I had not downloaded and installed the latest drivers from ZOOM.
Makes a world of difference ya know!
Since you seem to have some knowledge of the 8KHA+....hehe.....If I try to oc above 147mhZ FSB, I start getting video twitches. Can the AGP slot/card be oc'd or have the voltage changed on this mobo?
I think I am doing pretty well at 145 FSB with stock cooling but I had a goal of 152 FSB (which would put my PCI at 38mhZ which is about as high as I want to risk). This little 1600+ Palamino seems to love speed!

Thanks for your quick replies above.

Sorry, but nothing you can do about the AGP speed on that board. Only thing you would be able to do is swapping your video card for something that's more tolerant of high AGP speeds, but that's probably not that great an idea. There are no voltage controls for AGP on this board either so there's no real overvolting of your vid card. I was able to get my 8KHA+ up to 163 using a cheesy Radeon 8500 and minimal PCI devices. The only card I was using was a NIC and I was using onboard sound. I've had it running that way for over a year now. I know none of this helps you, but perhaps it'll give you a better idea of the capabilities of your board.

On another note, glad you got your modem problems squared away. If you need any more help with anything, please feel free to hang around and post.
