Latest BIOS (2116) and my modem

I updated last night my 8KHA+ to 2116, and right away I noticed my modem speeds improved. My 56K was connecting before at 49200, but downloaded at about 2.3k. As of last night, it now downloads at 5.2k. Yes, I had tried different PCI slots and drivers and different modems, and all experienced the same thing. Wasn't the ISP as I tested with a different PC and had 5.x+ speeds.

The BIOS I was using before was the one from November, FYI.

It's possible. From what I've seen of both external and internal modems, they do not provide enough noise isolation between the electroically noisy environment that is the PC, and the business end of the modem.

Internal modems are most likely to suffer from these problems, but I've come across external modems that do suffer from noise radiated via the serial cable.

Any views, thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. They don't necessarily represent those of my employer (BlackBerry).

Welcome to our BBS, nullCRC. The best sustained DL's I ever had with a 56k dial-up modem was 5.2 kbps. But 4.3 was the usual "best," and 2.3 happened way too often.
Let's hope that the BIOS update made the difference, and that it'll "stick!"
