You can do this by using an ethernet cross-over cable which is wired slighty differently to a regular cable. This means you don't need a router.

Just google for one or go to a local computer shop.

The way that I do it is burn files to CD or DVD. Then again, that can get quite time consuming especially if you have lots and lots of files to transfer. Assuming that you have your computers all setup on a network you can share files throughout the network and transfer files that way. I've never had a lot of files to transfer though, so you might as well find one of those cross-over cables.

Probably the least expensive and fastest way to tranfer the files would be to buy an adapter ( like this) that lets you put the laptop HD in your desktop temporarily. I use them all of the time.

That's a nice solution, cheap too. But I think the cross over is cheaper and more functional.... ad hoc simple network.

You'll need to set-up file sharing. Just right click on a folder or drive and click on the sharing option. You may need to set-up a user with the same name and password on each machine.

In some computers this would instantly void your warranty, though. I thought about doing something like that when i got my powerbook, but the only thing I can touch in there without screwing up the warranty is the battery and RAM. I dunno about what kind of notebook was bought but sharing the HDD on the network sounds like the best way to do it.

P.S. - I realize that saying that I own a Powerbook may be sacrilege in these forums. Yes, I own a Mac. Yes, I own a PC. I use each of them for different things. The PB gets most of the everyday useage and the XP machine gets used for gaming and modding. Please forgive me for being a heathen, I just love the way Apple does.
