What's a reasonable temp for a laptop HD?

I was running Spinrite on my laptop because I got a random reboot and it said that I didn't have a bootable drive. Anyway, Spinrite reads from SMART and tells me that the drive is 60C and warns me that anything above 55C is too high. I get the feeling that Spinrite is being too conservative. Does anyone know what acceptable operating temp for a laptop HD is? I presume it has to be more temperature tolerant than a desktop.

Depends on the laptop drive to be honest. If you can dig up the manufacture's specifications, you can see what they recommend as the maximum temperature for the drive. Laptop drives do tend to run hot, as they're enclosed with no airflow!

I left Spinrite on before I went to bed last night, and it's still going. It's apparently found some disk errors that it's recovering. That's the problem with these low level diagnostics. It just takes way too much time.

I took the HD out and it turns out that it's a Hitachi Travelstar. I guess I'll look up the specs to see what the tolerable operating temps are.
