Question straight dialing AOL, connecting without their software?

Has anyone ever heard of a way to connect to AOL without using their software? I want to find a way, their software uses way to much resources, and I get disconnects while playing UT.

No i have never heard of doing that. The reason is i think i remember they dont use standard connection properties if you look in your network config you will see a aol-dialup adapter. I think they have cutsom settings they pbbly dont want to let out.

As far as I know, AOL don't use a standard PPP session running TCP/IP. They use their own propriatory protocol for communication. Thus, the only way you can access AOL is using their software.

The other option is to upgrade your machine to handle AOL's software at the same time as UT or swap your provider.

I would need to get a job first though. My mom has the AOL account and I made one for me and my sister who lives a few states across. My mom won't switch, so I would have to pay for it myself. I actually just found an isp that is like $6.99 a month. I might want to look into that as soon as summer comes around and can start working again.

I wish you good fortune and Godspeed on finding a job so that you can free yourself from the slime dripping scum soaked shackles of AOL. I have friends that have used it for five years. One of them knows PC's at least twice as well as I do.

Perhaps AOL hasn't mistreated them. Don't get me started on the inexcusable, illegal and immoral actions that AOL took on my behalf.

Surely someone in your area needs their lawn cut? Still under six feet of snow? How about that driveway?

They are a very evil company. We pay with a checking account just for AOL and only deposit the fee in it monthly. So one month AOL accidently took out the money twice. 2nd check bounced, and our account was disabled. We called AOL, and they did nothing even though they said they reactivated it. OK, finally they reactived the account and emailed us saying they were sorry for the error and they will give us the next 3 months for free. OK, i saved the e-mail and printed it out. A month passes and our account was disabled again!!!, why because they didn't recieve the payment!! We called them and then read them the email they sent us. They denied it and did nothing. Long story, but I wa going away for the whole summer and was planning on just using AOL as my provider to were I was going and this happeded the week I was leaving. OK, so we try to reactivate the account using the checking account after they denyed the email. They then told us they don't accept checking accounts!!!! What ******** lying pieces of trash . So basically a few phone calls later we get our account back. My mom still uses AOL, because she doesn't want to lose her email, and plus she won't use a credit card, and AOL seems to be the only "isp" (and I use that term loosly) that takes checking.

So AOL is the anti-christ. I really hate AOL with a passion. OH yea, they never did honor their email about the 3 free months.

Get yourself a cable connection in most cases its about $40 a month and you can write a check. Not like they are much better than AOL because AOL and Time Warner are sleeping together. The reason connection speeds are so low on RR networks anymore is because they are/were routering connections through routers in dulles(sp) VA. This was going on about Jan but I don't know if it is still going on but if you see atnn or something like that when you do a tracert then your being routed through AOL in VA.

If you still want to chat or something just use AIM. Or try using AOL's bring your own access plan, and connect using tcp/ip.

I'm using AOL because it's free, and I can't afford the $50 a month for cable. For games now I just use netzero, but those popup ads are getting annoying.

So i'm guessing no straight dialing with AOL. Oh well.
