Intel seeks wireless unification

The two competing 4G wireless systems, Wimax and Long Term Evolution (LTE), should be united, according to Intel.

Because WiMax isn't being adopted by mobile operators (PLMNs), and Intel's worried they won't get their piece of the pie? Or that Intel's made WiMax an integral part of their newest mobile chipsets, and are realising that currently, it's not very useful?

LTE isn't quite here yet, but pretty much fits in with the existing PLMN infrastructure, including cell towers (after all, it's pretty much in the evolutionary chain from GSM -> GPRS -> UMTS -> HSDPA -> LTE). In Europe, WiMax has very limited spectrum available to it, meaning that if you deploy WiMax, you've got to build lots of cells.
