Daniel Ionescu, PC World
Dec 2, 2008

After months of waiting, Nokia finally announced the N97, the company's second (unreleased) device to challenge the iPhone and revive to the N-series to their former glory. With a 3.5" touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera and 32GB of memory, the N97 is one phone worth waiting for in the New Year. [Front page...]

This phone looks sick. Couple a qwerty keyboard, operating system with open development, a large, high-res touchscreen (albeit resistive), and I think you have a winner.

Lets hope that someone subsidizes it, I'm not one to pay $5-600 for a phone.

There's always been free development tools for Symbian. There's no requirement to pay any money to develop or release software on Symbian devices.

As far as mobile phones go, there are issues with them being completely open source. Manufacturers have to ensure that the devices will not breach their RF licensing terms. Thus parts will remain closed source in order to meet the regulations.

Right, I was listing an open development platform for the N97 as a positive as opposed to a certain competitor in the superphone market.
