Slow browsing using DLink DSL-G604T rev II

Hopefully a quick one,

I did have 1500/256 and this was the problem:

I have used both a DLink DSL-G604T rev 1, and a Netcomm NB6PLUS4W and had no problem browsing the net, downloading with Firefox, and downloading torrents simultaneously. However, since moving over to a DSL-G604T, downloading torrents, even when they are only downloading at 5-10kb/s browsing is still nigh impossible. Timeouts, page cannot be displayed etc etc.

I've since upgraded to 8000/384 and still have the same problem.

Is there any settings I may have over looked. All 3 modems were configured the same as far as I can tell.

Yeah, router has newest version. DNS? How can I check that. Also. when there are no downloads, Internet runs at full 8mbit speed which confuses me somewhat.

See if you can limit the number of upload connections that your torrent client makes. It seems that the G604 has had issues with handling bittorrent traffic...

Limited the upload connections. I'll see how it goes. Is that a guess, or is it a known issue with G604?

There have been some known issues with the G604. Bittorrent can often attempt to make a lot of dead connections (due to other systems going offline, or being behind firewalls), and that can clog up a router's state table. The effects of a full state table are usually the inability to make further connections!

I'm not sure why the router suffers as much as it does - I can only assume that DLink didn't give it enough space to store enough state to track all the connections?

Unfortunately most home NAT devices don't tell you how many simultaneous connections they will support. An attempt at opening a connection counts just as much as a connection that is established and opened. Wiki claims that bittorrent can attempt as many as 500 connection attempts per second. Given that it can take minutes for entries to time out, that's quite a few connections that need to be tracked.
