iPhone 3G and Wi-Fi password??

I am trying to configure this phone to access the net via my router wi-fi.

It sees the router, but asks for a password, yet there is no such thing, my router uses WEP, so I'd expect to be able to set-up the WEP key on the phone, but don't see that anywhere.

Anyone know how to set this up?

I had the same problem awhile back, this set of instructions from byronmiller got me going. I haven't had my iphone for awhile but I don't think it's changed.

1. Click Settings.
2. Click WiFi.
3. Turn off Ask to Join Networks.
4. Click Other in the Choose a Network list. (Ignore that it might have found your network.)
5. Type in your network name.
6. Tap where it says None in the Security box. Click your security type. For instance if you are using WEP, click WEP. (This is the key step).
7. Click Other Network to return to the previous screen.
8. Enter your password.
9. Click Join and you should be good to go.

Thanks, but that doesn't work for me. Just says "unable to join", no explanation as to why.

Downloading the software update for the phone, hopefully it'll work after that...

Ditch WEP and switch to WPA2 (WPA2 with EAP would be good, but is overkill for home users), use a different ESSID and a suitably long passphrase.

I'll do that, so long as everything else I have supports WPA2...

I had forgotten that I'd restricted wireless access via MAC Address, so just added the phone's MAC Address to the allowed list and it worked.

What do you have that only supports WEP? WEP doesn't provide any protection for data - With a PTW attack against WEP, the time to break a WEP key can easily be measured in seconds...

Really informative post. Like this post, it's disturbing but very informative.
