network drive

im trying to hookup a network drive to a computer using the ethernet port on both devices. the computer is using a pci wireless card so the ethernet port is not being used. so i figured i would assign that port a different network than the network that is being used to access the internet via the wireless nic. i then put the drive on the that same network and they can both ping each other but can't access the information on the drive. it doesn't show up in my computer. although using the drives provided utilities i know the drive is up and running because it shows me how much space is available. so what am i doing wrong.
