I have to say that 3G where I live is a total joke. It is pure suckage, and that's when it does actaully work!

At my current location, I can see about 5.7Mbit/sec downstream and 256Kbit/sec upstream over UMTS with one provider, and 2.9 Mbit/sec downstream and 324 Kbit/sec upstream with another provider. That doesn't strike me as too poor. I guess that some people believe that mobile broadband is going to be as fast as cable/xDSL?

If you're not in an area with 3G coverage, then you might well only see 14Kbit/sec.

As far as issues go, I tend to spend more time wrestling with 3G "modems" than with the networks themselves. I've come across far too many problems with things such as 3G modems locking up, losing signal or just plain refusing to work for no apparent reason.

I'm getting 331Kbit/sec down, and 80Kbit/sec up, right now.

Yeah, that's pretty sucky. Is that the same provider that's planning to go LTE (4G)?
