I need basic wireless network setup how to-

Ok guys, my son has a couple laptops and had set up his wireless connections using Cisco's Network Magic (trial). Now that's expired and he can't get the laptops to see the wireless connection.
I don't know what router he's got, but I need a basic how-to on getting connected to wireless.
I plan to try to help him tomorrow, but I don't run wireless and haven't too much of a clue as to getting it connected.

Typically, the access point (or router) will broadcast the network name, and computers in the vicinity can then pick up the broadcast. If you're using Windows, then the connect to a network wizard will usually pick up the network, leaving you just to enter the network password that's been configured on the access point/router.

You might well need a wired connection to discover (or set!) the wireless password on the router (typically it will be WPA PSK).

He said he already tried that stuff. He thinks his router may be bad. I think he's going to try a new one. I'll let you know if that solves the problem.
