WiMAX vs. fibre

A local company is to offer internet and home phone using WiMAX.

Meanwhile, the state owned telco is busy upgrading all the copper to fibre.

Obviously, fibre is potentially much faster, but would also be more expensive.

They say WiMAX will offer speeds of up to 20Mb/s, compared to about 100Mb/s on fibre.

How good or bad is WiMAX likely to be?

It will be fine, if you are the only one using it. But of course I'm sure that won't be the case.

The answer is "It depends" of course. WiMax can support both contention based and contention free access - contention free access will guarantee a bandwidth, whereas contention based depends on how many people are using it. The fact that the telco says "up to 20Mb/sec" would indicate it's contention based. Might want to find out the max contention ratio.

Like most things, if they implement fixed WiMax well, it should be pretty good. If they implement mobile WiMax or implement it badly, then it's going to be pretty horrible.
