ARM announces next-gen Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53, 64-bit smartphone processors

Quote:
We're just barely seeing the first powerful ARM Cortex-A15 processors in bleeding edge devices like the new Samsung Chromebook and Google's upcoming Nexus 10 tablet, but the race for higher power and higher efficiency goes on. Today, ARM's announcing the Cortex-A50 series of processor cores, which will likely feature prominently in the smartphones, tablets, and possibly even the server rooms of the future.

Phones need a great battery life, 64 bit computing would seem to work against this need... So my question would be, what the battery life like?

" 3x the performance or 1/4 the battery drain"

they have two years to make good on this...":O}

Sounds like they will offer the choice of more performance or lower power consumption with performance the same as what is available today.

What we really need is a breakthrough on battery tech.

The 3x performance is at the same power consumption as current ARM cores. However, on most smartphones/tablets, the processing core is not the largest consumer of power, the screen backlight is, closely followed by cellular network and then GPU.

The Cortex-A57 can be run in 16way multiprocessing BTW, if you want an ARM server.

Batteries may yet save this world...if we can develop them for our purpose. Batteries are what will set the windmills to spin and the solar cells to shine...

You have to charge them up though before you can get the power out. You've lost about 30% of the power you put in them by that stage!
