I have primarily used hubs, never direct connect but I think it is basically the same. If not, I'm sure someone will correct me. Go to Device Manager and make sure your Nic's are properly installed. In window Xp on your Nic's properties, enable "Client for MS Networks" and "File and Print Sharing" and "Tcp/Ip". Same deal in Win95 except go to the Network icon in the Control Panel. Go to Window Explorer and select the drives or directories you want to share and right click, go to properties. About half way down you will see "Sharing", click on that and follow the directions on the dialogue box. You should be able to see you shared directories on My Network Places, if not go to Network and Internet options in XP and click on Network options. On the left should be "setup a home network". Just follow the wizard. I believe you can use your XP disk on the win95 machine to set it up also. I think that should work, I hope.

Some basics to get you started:

Make sure drivers for the NICs are installed.
Make sure the workgroup for both machines are identical.
Make sure both PCs are talking the same language, Net Buei or TCPIP.

Can you describe what you see, or don't see?

If I recall correctly, you need to install the TCP/IP stacks for Win95. I forgot where to get them since I haven't had it in 5 years. I'm sure someone must have it.

Almost forgot, do you know which version of win95 you are running? If memory serves me correctly, there are 3 different versions, with significantly different capabilities, including networking. By default, I think the original version did not install the necessary tools and drivers required to network... As a result was much harder to configure. I think the most recent version was OSR2.

If memory serves me right..... i have NEVER gotten a Crossover cable network to work correctly- I have always used a Hub and two cables- Frys has netgear 1omg hubs for about $15- i would suggest that-

I'm not trying to be mockish here but cable crossovering was simplistic for me when I did it. I think the reason you may be having trouble is because of the strong contrast between the two os's. When I did it it was with 98 to 98. Maybe XP just doesn't like 95. Just out of curiosity, which 95 are you using? 95, 95A or 95B (osr2)?

Just out of hypothetical curiosity, it isn't legal to buy on behalf of someone who's no longer in the educational system is it?

HEY, I'm STILL on 98. Though I hear that you can make XP look like 98.

Hum......................
