Another HDD deal

Odd, I know it's monday.... but it's been pouring rain here the last few days. Either that is the reason or it's not such a good deal but....

CompUSA has Maxtor 160gb 8mb cache HDDs for $170 less a $70 rebate. I went there this morning to pick up some blank dvds...

Any way, I get there and looking around I found an entire shelf full of the hdds.... at least 15 or so. On the box it says free ATA133 controller inside, and on the shelf was the price.... 170 - 70 rebate..

Hmmm.... I really have too many hdds already, but I was really tempted.

I just checked newegg... seems they carry the exact same model... for $240!!

BTW... Obviously, I can't vouche for all stores, but I can confirm it for central NJ. Also, you can get the same deal through CompUSA online... but no guarantees since they have it listed as "generic ATA133 8mb cache" and there's no mention of the ATA133 controller.

Ok... I'm feeble and couldn't resist. I went back and bought 2, (one for a friend). I talked with one of the clerks. It seems they have over 100 in "the back" here in central Jersey. Also, if you are wondering how good this deal is, the pic above is taken right from newegg, and the drive costs $240. Here is a pic of the drive I bought today, even without the rebate, it's still a good deal:

Just watch out and keep track of your mail in rebates from CompUsa, have had to fight for 2 of my rebates and resubmit them numerous times. After doing search on web found out that this is a widespread problem with them.

I've been pretty lucky. I've only had to deal with 1, and it was a $10 staples rebate. They claimed I sent the wrong upc... Fortunately, I always make copies. The bright side was, they accepted the photocopy of the UPC when I called to complain.

This is a pretty big rebate, so I'll be following up on this one. Always make a photocopy of the receipt, form, and UPC.

Here we go again..
This sunday... the same drive is on sale again.
This time Staples is carrying it for $180, with an $80 rebate. I don't think this one comes with the ata133 controller tho.
