deal or steal?

hi,

i bought a seagate 300 gig back in january which had a $40 mail in rebate. after several online inquries, i finally got my rebate check yesterday with my name mispelled. today i got home and i see another $40 check from seagate except this time my name is spelled correctly. if i take the mispelled check to the bank, i'm positive they'd deposit it for me because this has happened before; if the check is off by one letter they're cool with it. the checks look identical except for different check numbers and dates...and i'm not a banker so i think they're both legitimate.

should i cash both the checks or only one? if i cash both, then i'll recommend seagate drives to everyone for the rest of my life. however if i cash only one (the correctly spelled check), then i can live with myself, recommend western digital and seagate drives to everyone and rest assure that my soul won't be eternally damned for theft.

Think of all the rebate that you have sent away for and not gotten. Cash both and feel free to recomend which ever HDD manufacturer you feel is best

We don't have these mail in rebates in the UK.

Do they often fail to send a cheque?

I get back about 3/4 of them. I always get the big ones cause I keep records on those. But on ones that are smaller a lot don't get honored. Best Buy and Dell are a guarunteed to get your rebate, Cuircut City you will most likely get it back but it takes 6 months, CompUSA is tough to get a rebate from.

Weeellll, here's what happend to me. Bought several 60 gig compUSA hardrives, and was to have received a $100 gift card. Turned out I did not need the drives, took them back for a refund. Forgot all about the rebates, and get a gift card 7 months later. Used it on new hardware without a hitch...go figure. BUT in retrospect, even though I usually do the "right thing",I have been burned for literally hundreds of dollars. Lost submissions, incorrect UPC's, postmarked too late, invalid product, I've seen all their excuses...so I guess my karma ran over their dogmatic lies...!
I do have a good officemax story, bought a plamcam there for $450, came with free printer. Sold printer for $100, got letter from OMAX that they wuld not honor submission (forget the reason, but fortunately had UPC copies, receipts, forms, even copy of envelope). Went to the store, showed them my letter of denial, manager cut me a $100 check on the spot. Must have been 3 or 4 months later, I get the chech ANYWAY! Spent it too, again didnt put the two together. Wow, a $450 camera for $150. Usually goes the other way...

Anyway, first post here, was lurking for the longest time and decided to go legit...hope its a nice place. Also hope to buy/sell/trade some hardware here. Been trading Agora what 5 yrs now...

ahhhhhhh

i cashed the first $40 check last week. then later last week cashed the second one. i just got off the phone and the customer service rep with my bank told me that the second check did not have any money behind it...even though its a corporation (seagate). and now my bank is going to charge me $5 and removed that $40 credit.

just when you think you got the best of "the man," he comes and finds another way to stick it to you.

LOL! I would have torn up the improperly printed check. Some folks say I'm too honest for my own good.

Well, look at it this way...... they may have ALREADY voided the OLD check. So you might run into a prob when trying to cash it.

If you do manage to cash it, buy another seagate with the money

not a bad deal

i think you got a retty good deal. rebate offers vary sometimes with each web site. different incentives are offered to different retailers. sometimes not. i check http://www.buyforless.com to see whats out there. its hit or miss though when you go to buy something if you can find something that saves you money. to often i buy then it goes on sale the moment the trash man picks up the boxes it came in. thanks
