install XP

I currently am running windows 98 SE, I want to completely wipe it off and install XP Professional, how do I go about doing this? Getting the software isnt a problem, its just how im gonna do it. do I just format the hard drive then reboot with the windows cd in the CD drive? maybe a floppy thrown in for the boot, I really want to know what I doing so I dont end up with a paper weight of a hard drive.

The simplest way to install XP is by booting off of the CD. From there, there will be options to delete partitions, create new partitions, format, and finally install. Take a look at the WinXP FAQ sticky on top too.

Mook is right on. You may have to go into your BIOS to get your PC to boot from CD for this. You don't want to do it from Windows. Be sure to back up any files you need beforehand!

If you want to make the partitioning and formatting process more complicated so that it will take more time(who doesn't?) you can boot the SE machine with an SE Startup floppy. Then fdisk the MBR and the drive(if you really want to wipe a HDD clean, formatting alone won't give you that fresh scrubbed feeling)into a partition scheme you want. Then format the volumes/partitions. Win98SE can only format in FAT32(maybe FAT16 if you insist on a retro-look.)

Then boot the machine from Win XP's CD-ROM. It's easy to convert FAT32 partitions into NTSF if you desire to.

I remember reading that XP can't handle FAT 32 partitions that are 32 Gb or larger. If you want to use BIG partitions they have to be NTFS. Takes the fun out of the long involved method of preparing for XP.
