FreeBSD user's?

Anyone using FreeBSD? I'm curious if it is useful for those who don't write their own scripts very well. It's Linux mania everywhere for good reason, are recent FreeBSD releases OK for dummies like me?

I won't lie to you, getting a GUI install on BSD is not easy. It's best to start out with Linux. Start with a RH distro and move up to Deb, Slack, Gentoo or even LFS. It'll get you ready for ol' Beastie.

FreeBSD?

It's like that grumpy old accountant in the corner. If you know how to deal with it, it'll fly doing the stuff it's good at. If you don't know how to deal with it, it's awkward and unfriendly.

Linux is an easier path into the world of UN*X. Once you know what to expect with UN*X, FreeBSD is much easier to handle.

Thank you all very much for your opinions about FreeBSD. I wanted to try it before I investigated Linux. At the time, there were ~one and a half Web sites that offered hand holding with FreeBSD. Worse, only one of the support sites didn't sneer at you as it erased your email from its Server. Talk about an elitist clique.

There were four hundred sites that offered help to newfers in Linux. Red Hat 5.2 was my first foray into *nix land.

FreeBSD caught my attention before Linux did a few years ago. Luck of the click I guess. FreeBSD is said to be much improved over the years. Will I buy it(including the FAT manual(s)? We'll see.

Give it a shot. I would highly recomend getting the package w/ the handbook. You'll learn alot.
Either way good luck on your journey into the *nix.

I know Postal has used it. I'm sure he'll chime in or a PM might help.

OK, FreeBSD isn't a big hit hereabouts. But Sun's x86 Solaris, now that's a fine OS-- if you have an olde 2 Mb Vidcard and other ancient hardware. To be fair, I haven't tried the last version of Solaris for PC's. But Solaris was such APITA, I'm not upset that Sun pulled the plug on its x86 OS. Then again, it was pretty quick...

FreeBSD might be my next OS. I am getting pressure from my *BSD friends to use it, and it sounds nice... But then, Debian is nice too! And I haven't even tried out LFS yet!

Aww. FreeBSD's lil' devil is ten times better looking than any pic of Tux I've ever seen. I hate false advertising, so I can't use the FreeBSD mascot until I try the OS.
