Linux + Wireless Network

Okay, so I just ordered all my wireless networking equipment. I thought that being I will need my server as soon as we go wireless so getting it ready early would be nice

The PCI card is a Linksys WMP54G and the router is Linsys's 4port + Wireless DSL/Cable Router..

Can someone please help with making my Debian system work wirelessly? Thanks!

good luck

i had a hell of a time getting my linksys to work with redhat 8

i finally just coughed up the dough and got a cisco wireless card.... installed without a hitch

but that was redhat.... again... good luck

i know linksys has linux drivers available on thier website

i would start there first

and have you set up a wireless network before

Nope, never set up a wireless before I am hoping that someone can help tho.. I am not going to go for a Cisco after I bought this, being it costs twice as much..

I'm sure it will work some how

Sigma, if you've got a windows system, set it all up on a windows system first, so that you can be sure the thing works fine. Then, when you know everything's working, you can start working on Linux. That way you won't have to wonder where the problem is!

As long as the card is supported by linux you should be ok. If not, you might have lots of problems.

The card isn't supported... So what I am going to do is run WinXP and VMWare/Debian.. It should work, until there are proper drivers..

Is your plan to take over the whole wide world wirelessly working well, SiGmA_X? Sorry, had to see how many consecutive "w's" I could get in there!

Debian has its place--and its detractors. That apt-get feature is mighty tempting, at least for second(or is it third?) class Linuxers like me.

Have you tried Gentoo? It's emerge feature is just as good as apt-get but is very up-to-date

Superman likes Gentoo, this makes the OS interesting. It's great to hear from you, Kaitain!! Please keep us in the loop about your adventures with Gentoo!

Well, there'll be no adventures with Gentoo for a further 3 months, since I'm in Frankfurt and my computer isn't.

From first impressions, I like the "emerge" system, and once the system's built, it is smaller and faster. But it's a PITA working out what you want or need, and can take AGES if you decide to go the whole hog and build everything from scratch. There are one or two flaws with the current version, and while most of the documentation is very well written, there's a tragic lack of help for pretty fundamental things like what to configure into your kernel. I think the trick is to build everything you could ever possibly need as a module, and hope it works.

As a system in general, don't even consider it unless you have a) fast internet and b) a second computer to hand so you can browse more documentation while building the first. Better yet, also have 3 clear days, sufficient coffee and maybe a good book to read...

But it works, and works very well.

Superman - How you doing!? It's been a while! Yes, I like Debian. The `apt-get` packageing feature might be nice, but I don't use it other then for the basics, like compilers and stuff that takes a bit more time and doesn't need customization.. Here's the entire `apt-get install` that I use:
Quote:
apt-get install wget flex bison libgd-dev gcc-3.0 libg++2.8.1.3-dev g++-2.95 make iptraf uw-imapd zlib1g-dev kernel-package libncurses5-dev
As soon as there is 802.11g support for Linux, I am looking at GenToo or Debian for my main OS, and no more WinXP.. I have no need other then wireless for WinXP!

Mainstream Linux distributions become more "Windohs" like as time goes on. There is little real need to use MS OS's anymore. All the same, it's a MS world.

It looks like Redmond is figuring out how to make your PC their PC. Which wouldn't be so bad if they bought it in the first place. As they didn't, I'm uneasy about "Longhorn." Digital Rights Management will be a nightmare if it ends up as it's being advertised. This, plus other planned horrors will truly take your machine away from you.

I'm wondering if an "Interrnet Appliance" will become the WTG? If so, your "real PC" will lose a lot of its value, unless you have little interest in the Web.

Sounds pretty normal for kernel compiles. Thousands of options and little explination for them.
