ESS support in Linux

Alright, here's the deal, I have an el cheapo Compaq in the basement. It uses an ESS integrated sound solution. Linux doesn't detect it. I can't play mp3's. My dad wants me to delete my webserver and install Windows98 if I can't get the sound working. I don't know the exact number of the sound, it's like ESS 1868 or something like that. Does anyone have any ideas. I'm running Mandrake 8.

you tryed compiling your own kernel? it should have an option for supporting it. Does it have soundblaster compatability? if so it may work by being set as a soundblaster 16 or pro which would at least be enough for mp3's
