SuSE 9.0 Personal. I like it!

It installed very smoothly. Not sure that it's ready for everyone's desktop, but it's getting mighty close!

I have been thinking about blowing my system away and reinstalling with Linux and then running the Windows stuff I need under VMWare (the Microsoft compiler really DOESN'T like WINE).

One of the distros I was looking at was SUSE, the other was Xandros. Anyone have any knowledge of Xandros.

i run SUSE 9.0 pro. tis real nice. I found it installs brilliantly on my own machine, but tried to install on a lower spec machine (which its supposed to work on) just for messing around with routing and what-have-you. but it just seems to jam the system

On some older systems you might need to fettle the installer slightly:
On the boot: prompt, simply boot with the acpi=off flag thus
Code:
boot: linux acpi=off
Depending on kernel version, you might need to do this the old way:
Code:
boot: linux noacpi
There is a menu (F2 I think) that tells you what boot options you may use.

Knowing SuSE, they probably turn most things off. If you're having trouble, look at turning the following off in order if you can:

acpi (fixes most problems)
apic (it's not the same. Might use the noapic, nosmb, apic=off or smb=off)
fb (framebuffer - especially with ATi and some onboard video cards)
dma (if you need to turn this off, give up)

I've recently installed RedHat9 on the server. I was thinking of going with SuSE, but decided on this "oldish" RH. It seems pretty good too, and its free for download on the webbie.

Not exactly. It IS free, but only if you install it using a network install from their FTP site. You can't download an ISO and burn your own CDs.

http://www.linuxiso.org/

You can get an ISO and burn all the disks you want from here.....
As well they have just about every other current and earlier distro of just about any linux version at the link above. All legal and on the "Up & Up".

Good bandwidth and throughput as well. I was adveraging about 360bps which is close to what I get from big sites like MS.

I've installed SuSE 9.0 Pro on my system, and so far it has taken me 3 weeks to even get close to just making the scroll wheel on my mouse work. What's the point of that?

It's a pain in the backside, but reasonably well documented if you use google.

I have a feeling that SUSE 9.1 gets that right when it installs, but I'm not sure. I'm hoping one of our SUSE 9.1 users will put me right here!

PS, Welcome to AOA!

I'm wanting to say that it found my thumbwheel just fine, but I can't remember for sure.

I've been running Suse 9.1 for a couple months now. I'm definitely new! Got everything to work with very little knowledge (cept palm pilot), even an unsupported camera. YES you can get the 9.1 "personal" iso file and upgrade to whatever easily via FTP sites for free via suse home page.

Definitely detected my 3 button mouse and everything else for that matter. Have heard it detects nvidia (what I have) better than ATI if that matters.

nVidia's support for Linux generally appears to be much better than ATI's.

nope... SUSE will see that you have windows installed and then ask how you want to set up the disks.. I ran a dual for about 9 months when I found I wasm't using windows (and Cedega ran CivIII Conquest with no problems ) I went straight SUSE..

Check your /etc/X11/XF86Config file. That is where all the configuration of the mice goes...
Here is a portion of the relevent section of my config file for the wheel mouse (off the wall brand) ..

Section "InputDevice"
Driver "mouse"
Identifier "Mouse[1]"
Option "ButtonNumber" "5"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Name" "Autodetection"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Vendor" "Sysp"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

the ZAxis part seems to be the important part..

If it's a laptop and you want both a touchpad and usb mouse to work let me know and I can post that..

Adolph
