Error Opening Control Panel

When I try to open 'Control Panel' through XP Pro I get a Windows Explorer window saying, "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
If I click "details" I get another Windows Explorer window containing the following info:

Error signature
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2800.1221
ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1217
Offset: 00007ec4

I then click View tech details about this report and get a very long error report. At the end of this report it says:
The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\MATTED~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER5.tmp.dir00\ appcompat.txt

I'm really stuck, please help.

Have you run a virus check and checked for spyware? If not, you should. I'm not convinced that is your problem, but it can't hurt.

Have you recently installed any new software or drivers? It sounds like there may be a Control Panel applet that is crashing.
