Well Done Nvidia!!!!!!!!!!

nVidia, may they be eternally praised, have now released full drivers for nForce chipsets under kernel 2.6 including gigabit ethernet (instead of the 100MBit that forcedeth allows), and the full 8.1 channel audio allowed by SoundStorm. Get it here

The spdif in linux is pretty hard to enable. I mean, the Intel modules work fine with the Nforce hardware, but telling Alsa to use SPDIF instead of analogue is a nightmare. Search round on the internet.. loads of tutorials, bout a half hour job. The NV drivers do not need to include sound, as the compatible driver is bundled with the lin kernel.

I downloaded the free version which is 32 bit. I ordered the 64 bit a couple of days ago, with any luck it should be here today, ah reinstall heaven.

Actually I don't really mind reinstalling Suse. No more separate disks with sound, chipset, graphics drivers and so on. It's really pretty simple, it's only once you have the basic package installed the headaches start.

Spoke too soon. The nVidia audio driver is an OSS (i.e. the obsolete sound architecture) driver, so I had to be careful what modules I compiled into my kernel. Once I had the module inserting correctly, it became necessary to set KDE to use OSS as its sound system.

The driver also compiles a program called nvmixer, which is needed to set which channels do what, and control their volumes. Software mixers like kmix and alsamixer will crash on startup, so don't even try.

OK so the upshot of this is that after a few days of messing about, I have Gentoo compiled for 64 bit with full OpenGL accelerated AGP 8x graphics, hardware sound, onboard gigabit ethernet, a few pounds less weight and the start of RSI...

We'll know when Linux is ready for "the average user" when it doesn't need this amount of labour to get things to work. Now that nVidia have started to do good things with their nforce drivers, I'd hope their development will accelerate ( ) at the same rate as the graphics drivers.
