windows updates wont work since sp2 install.

I have XP Pro, and yesterday sp2 came up in the updates list, so I promptly installed it. After restart it recognised I have NIS2004 installed, but nagged that I have automatic updates off, but I prefer to update myself.

Anyways, tried to updated today, and as soon as it starts searching for new updates, my LAN icon disconnects and reconnects continually, and the IE cant find url page comes up.

I changed the setting to allow automatic updates, but then it starts continually disconnecting / connecting again.
If I have the network connection details panel open, all the details (IP etc) disappear!

I have D-Link ethernet modem, and EPoX 8RDA+ with onboard LAN!

Try turning off widow's firewall. It's ON by default with SP2.

As I said, it recognised I had NIS2004, and the firewall was turned off by default - it is definitely off cause I double checked!!

You may have to uninstall and reinstall NIS and NAV.

I can't see that's the problem, everything works fine except for windows update.
It seems that when I use windows update it causes my connection from the PC to the modem to disconnect!
The little icon in the system tray flashes, and in the status panel it loses my IP etc.

You need to have "Automatic Updates" enabled in the services menu. Check the services menu to see that it's set at automatic or manual and not disabled.

It is set to enabled.

I cannot understand, it seems that when I run windows update, or set automatic updates on, it causes my link from my PC to the modem to disconnect.

Perhaps I will never be able to update again

I misunderstood - I thought you were having problems with Norton updates, not windows.

At what point during the update do things go wrong? Are you able to access the windows update pages with IE?

As soon as I select which type of update, and the green bar starts going across the screen, and like I said, as soon as I turn on automatic updates as well!!

It should be set to "Automatic" or "Manual." Does it look the same as the picture below??

Things like this are often caused by viruses which intentionally try to prevent security updates.
