Unhappy whine whine whine wine

i have compiled wine.

i tried installing tiberian sun:

command prompt > navigate to mnt\cdrom2 and wine setup.exe
but it complained about old files...

so i tried an older game original command and conquer.

wine setup.exe

it just sits there doing absolutly nothing even after 10 mins.. nothing!
i tried to install civilisation2 and double clicked the setup and told it to open in wine.. got the language selection and selected english, then nothing...

i must be doing something wrong.
im determined to get this to work at least once before i give up again

Hmm sounds in large part like your "wine" isn't configured properly. There's a nice little app called tkwinesetup which gives you a graphical tool for mapping Linux devices onto Windows drives and so forth.

Also try running it as wine setup.exe --debug all and post your error messages.

i've managed to mount the cd/dvd rom drives..
i even managed to get redalert 1, quake2, dark reign to install
i managed to run them as well, but with a few niggling problems
redalert is choppy, and jumpy and is quite slow :/

quake2 runs super slow under gl mode and not much better in software mode, and on dark reign as soon as the opening menu pops up i cant move the mouse

i'm inching my way there

Red Alert doesn't take too well to Wine emulation, if memory serves. Losing control of the mouse was always the problem on my system. I've found DX7 games to work best generally - things like Dues Ex...

tiberian sun wont install :'( complains about some com401 or somethin, cant quite remember at the mo, so i click update, and i get an error: this file does not need updating.. and then it asks to reboot the system (windows system :/)
maybe i will have more luck with Homeworld/homeworldd: cataclysm

i'm using a voodoo 5500.. is it worth changing to a gf2mx 400, both cards are only directx 7, but much more support in the way of drivers.

The best way to do this is a DUAL BOOT, because, say if the Linux you installed corrupted, then you have to do all that over again, why not a dual boot?

Wine and WineX serve a purpose. I don't always want to reboot into on those rare occasions I want to play a game. Besides, it's very hard to "corrupt" linux through normal use - only if you do Something Stupid As Root. Leave spontaneous corruption to another well known and expensive OS

i'm using a voodoo 5500.. is it worth changing to a gf2mx 400, both cards are only directx 7, but much more support in the way of drivers.

It might be - Wine makes a lot of use of OpenGL for its 3D support. The voodoo drivers are pretty limited in this regard whereas the nVidia drivers (and even ATi's drivers if you can get them working) have a somewhat more mature implementation. I think the voodoo drivers actually use Mesa, which is not fast.

I've had Homeworld working, only without any sound. I was using a very old version of WineX though - I think I'm still subscribed to it, and I've no idea what I've done to my WorldPay details... At the moment, though, I don't have a working 32 bit linux so I can't play along atm.

The error with Tiberian Sun is not with the game itself but with its installer. Installers make use of a load of libraries that sometimes work, and sometimes refuse to play nicely - com401 is probably one of these. I remember having real trouble with the installer for Outcast that grabbed and centred my mouse pointer and wouldn't allow it to move...

Try http://liflg.sourceforge.net/ for modified installers for games.

well i got a gf3 ti500 for £26.50 inc. vat an pnp off of ebay.

the cinematic sequences play really smoothly altho the scrolling in the actual game is slow and slows it down a bit..
stilll playable, maybe powerstrip will run under wine, i'll give it a go sometime.. in the meantime i'm enjoying some Red Alert.

Any advice on getting any of the settlers to install? 2, 3 or 4 i love these old games ^_^

Powerstrip probably won't run under Wine. Why not use nvclock?

How does that logic follow? All that happened is that piccoLEW overclocked his vid card too far; you can do that in Windows as easily as in Linux. Harping on about dual boot is helping noone.

If he played the game in windows he would have not have needed to overclock his card to get decent performence, he would not now have a fried card.

ul piccolew, at least it wasnt too much money into the card.

Hmm, a year ago I'd have agreed, but the nvidia linux drivers are now so good that there is no difference in speed between a Linux OpenGL game and a Windows one. WineX is now good enough that you only lose a few FPS doing the emulation parts. I do know, however, that nvclock is rather an aggressive app...

Heh, well then best of luck to him, personally i spent too long mucking around with win98 getting games to work and am now happy with win xp compatibility.

As always, perhaps someday i will give linux more then a passing try.

well it seems to be working okay today, i didnt really need to oc it, im gettin errors tryin to install redalert 2. keeps saying unload the debugger, i think it probably something to do with anti-piracy.

is there some sort of free or trial version of wineX im only using normal wine at the mo. i might get more luck with winex.. hmm

edit: i own the proper game. propbably the only series of games i feel strongly against pirating.

Actually, logic dictates that the most useful and easy solution is always the most logical..
Harping on? ROFL
(I can garantee you can do more in Windows than Linux, but that is not applicable in this thread)
I AM NOT TRYING TO START A LINUX VS. WINDOWS thing, so do not say anything about Linux greatness......No one wants to hear that, and no one wants to hear me anymore here.( I really know I should not have wrote this post, and I wouldn't if Mr. Kaitain hadn't been so rude about his "explanation")
I use Linux too, so dont preech me the features..(DUAL BOOT)
But I can see as how you guys are Linux fanatics, I will leave you be now..
