Printing from DOS

Hey all,

I've been asked to help someone setting up a network printers, I don't know many of the specifics about his setup currently aside from the fact that he currently has a printer connected locally to a PC via a parallel connector. When I asked him why he didn't just use USB, he said it was because he prints out of DOS.

As I'm thinking about setting up his new networked printer, I"m wondering if printing out of DOS is going to be a problem. I would assume that is determined mostly by the printer drivers but I know next to nothing about DOS.

My proposed network is like this:

computer ----> wireless router ---> wireless print server -----> printer via USB (or LPT if necessary)

Does anyone know if this is gonna be a problem?

I am assuming that the user is running some ancient program that has to print to lpt1: or something like that. You SHOULD be able to redirect the port in XP/2000 - trying to remember how heh.

It's pretty easy if you need to capture a network printer...

net use lptx \\printserver\printername /persistent:yes

For example, if I have a print server called Modo, and the printer share is 'Epson', then I could do:

net use lpt1 \\modo\Epson /persistent:yes

You could also capture more than one LPT port to different printers.

It's a bit harder if you want to do it to a local printer!
