Linux - Resolution Problems

I recently got the Ubuntu CDs I ordered a while back and liked the Live CD so much I decided to go and do a full install, as it seemed much friendlier than Slackware. Well, it did everything great so far (including picking up and configuring my PCMCIA Wireless LAN card) except my screen. I've gathered that this is a fairly well-known problem with laptops.

I THINK I'm supposed to edit something in my xorg.conf file, but I'm not sure what. Looking at xorg.conf, it seems as though (under 'screen') It knows it'll do 1024x768, but it might just need something added under 'monitor' to convince it. Right now it's running at 640x480, which is absolutely dreadful on this old LCD screen that the laptop has. Any ideas?

Answered my own question with a bit of hard work with google. I seriously don't know what the world would do without google. I had to add:

HorizSync 31.5 - 79.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 100.0

to xorg.conf under the 'Monitor' section. It was really that easy.

Well, I asked here because I had a problem with it earlier. I thought that I had found the values to add to the file, but when I rebooted the computer X refused to start. I tried to edit xorg.conf from the command line, but it was read only and it refused to be edited by a normal user. It was only then did I find out that Ubuntu installs no Root user, which seemed enormously unfortunate in my situation. However, sudo still works fine so I was able to edit the file back to its original state. I was reluctant to edit it again unless I knew that the lines I added were absolutely correct, though. I know that you guys are always here to cover my back!
